The director is an internal and external advocate for the CMU Honors Program and is responsible for managing all aspects of the program.

Works to increase high-quality curricular and co-curricular opportunities and experiences for Honors and other high-achieving students. Provides vision and leadership for transformative programming for Honors students. Manages the annual Centralis scholarship competition and supports recruitment of Honors and other high academic ability students.

Recruits and develops a cohort of Honors faculty who employ high impact learning practices. Serves as ad-hoc non-voting member of the Academic Senate's Honors Council and conveys recommendations to the Academic Senate or Provost's Office. Manages the Honors Program budget and oversees the Honors Program strategic plan, assessment, annual reports and program review. Teaches at least one Honors course per year.

The initial appointment will be for a three-year period and may be renewable.

Required Qualifications

  • Holds tenure as an associate professor or professor in an academic department at CMU.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and involvement with students beyond the classroom.
  • Experience working within, and passion for, Honors either at CMU or a prior institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment to increasing diversity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate teaching effectiveness and high impact learning.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated administrative and budget management experience (e.g., as a department chair).
  • Experience with personnel supervision; dealing with conflict
  • Experience with, and commitment to, student recruitment.
  • Experience with strategic planning.

    University Honors is a community of scholars since 1961, and it is home to the Centralis Scholar Program, the Honors Scholar Program, and the National Scholarship Program. There are approximately 550 Honors students. The CMU Honors Program is a nationally-recognized Honors Program winning nine national awards over the past 10 years, including the coveted National Honors Student of the Year Award. The staff consists of the director and a coordinator, as well as support staff and student assistants.
