Head of Finance

Department of Oncology, Old Road Campus Research Building, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7DQ

This post is available for internal applicants only

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a finance professional to join The Department of Oncology. As Head of Finance you will provide high-quality finance leadership and direction to the Departmental Finance, Grants and Trials Finance teams, and be a key member of the Department's senior team. You will be reporting directly to the Head of Administration and Finance, who has overall responsibility for the Department's professional services.

Your responsibilities will include leading financial management, financial planning and analysis - including budgeting and forecasting and interpreting a wide range of Terms and Conditions attached to possible funding sources, as well as driving forward and delivering on strategic project work relevant to your portfolio.

You will also provide expert advice and management information to members of the Department in relation to a wide range of financial issues, and will be expected to create financial models and reporting systems from scratch. You will bring your expertise to bear across the Department's finance, grants and trials portfolios in the context of a growing, dynamic and research-active Department. Annual turnover (General ledger, grants and trials combined is currently c. £28m).

About you

To be considered for this role you will be educated to degree level or equivalent and you will hold a recognised professional accountancy qualification, such as ACA, CIMA, ACCA or CIPFA. You will have demonstrable experience in a large, complex accounting environment with proven technical accounting skills, including budgeting and planning and a thorough understanding of the requirements of an academic department.

Excellent understanding of financial IT systems, including experience of using such systems, ideally Oracle Financials, and advanced excel skills are essential for this role.

Experience of working in the Higher Education sector in a research-intensive organisation would be advantageous.

This is a permanent position that offers some opportunity for hybrid working.
