  • Position Summary:

    The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Outdoor Adventures (OA) reports to the Outdoor Adventures Assistant Coordinator for Education. This position will assist with the planning, marketing, implementation, evaluation and general management of the Outdoor Adventures trips program and the student trip leaders during the academic year. This position will also take the lead in the planning, marketing and implementation of the wilderness orientation program at the beginning of the fall semester. In addition, the GA will also assist with all aspects of the OA program including equipment rental, climbing walls, and class offerings. This position will assist with the coordination of all OA trips programs, driving to program destinations, as well as leading weekend and extended outdoor educational trips. The Graduate Assistant will assist with program financial and participation reports. The Graduate Assistant will also assist in the development, marketing, coordination, and evaluation of programs and special events that enhance the recreational experiences of Outdoor Adventures participants. The GA will work to bring outdoor recreation opportunities and the Outdoor Adventures to areas frequented by UAF students outside of the Student Recreation Center. Examples of this are outreach programs and tabling at the residence halls, with the OA LLC, and the Wood Center Student Commons and Dining facility. This position will also identify and assist in collaborative department programming efforts. Additional duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Outdoor education experience in the following areas: backpacking, trip planning, youth summer camps, winter camping, rock and ice climbing, cross country skiing, leadership, outdoor cooking and wilderness first aid. Satisfactory work and/or academic experience in the outdoor education/recreation field. Candidates should have sufficient skills and experience to teach and share their skills with program participants.

    Risk management experience with high perceived risk. Must be able to flex a work schedule as needed to accommodate for classes, weather, and going out in the field as well as working in the office. Weekend and evening work is required; short notice possible. Many hours spent outside in cold environments require the ability to stay warm using a personal clothing system. Ability to: Adapt to changes in workload; work with limited supervision and in cooperation with other employees; handle difficult and stressful situations with diplomacy and finesse; enforce state laws and University policy.

    Preferred Experience & Education:

    2-4 years of outdoor leadership and outdoor skills experience. Wilderness First Responder. Professional industry certifications and credentials in outdoor recreation. (i.e. AMGA CWI/SPI, AIARE Level 1, ACA Canoe Level 1-3, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Etc.)

    Required Experience & Education:

    Bachelor's degree and sufficient experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the responsibilities of the position. General knowledge about Alaska's biological, geological, and natural resource diversity is desirable. Successful applicants must be accepted to the UAF Graduate School prior to fall semester 2023. Possess or have the ability to obtain an Alaska driver's license within 30 days of employment, a clean driving record (3 years experience), proficient swimming skills, and a basic working knowledge about wilderness first aid.

    Salary Information:

    Starting rate is $21.00 per hour.
