Job Purpose

This job description covers the first-year placement for the Finance Graduate Trainee Tax, on their journey to become a fully qualified tax professional in the education/charity sector.

The main purpose of the role will be to work in the Tax team which is responsible for preparing and submitting all local and international tax returns for the University and its subsidiaries and managing the tax administration for all imports and exports to the University. The role holder will also have the opportunity to gain a range of other valuable work experience supporting Financial Reporting, Financial Control, Treasury, and Insurance teams who work closely with the Tax team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Support the Tax Manager and Tax Analyst in preparing statutory tax returns

- Gather data by running reports using Agresso and other university systems and requests to colleagues in finance and across the university

- Manipulate data gathered using Excel to assist with preparation of statutory returns including but not limited to: Corporation tax, VAT quarterly returns, VAT annual PESM adjustment and Capital Goods Scheme, Indian Tax return, and Country by Country reporting

- Additional and ad hoc responsibilities will be required within reason to support the needs and requirements of Tax team

Coordination and control of import and export procedures

- Liaising with the academic departments for required data and information for Customs clearances.

- Preparing and sending timely customs clearance instructions to shipping agents with correct Customs Procedure Codes to ensure VAT relief is obtained wherever possible.

- Assisting the academic departments with exportation of goods and ATA Carnet applications.

- Working closely with the Tax Analyst to improve and evolve the Import/export processes across the University.

Maintaining accounting records

- Processing entries in the Import Log with all required information.

- Ensuring accurate data input in the import log and maintaining accurate and full records for auditing purposes.

- Reconciling the Import Log with the deferment and postponed VAT accounting statements from HMRC on a weekly basis.

- Working closely with other teams within and out with Finance Office to ensure refunds received from HMRC/shipping agents are reallocated to appropriate sub-projects.

- Preparing and completing the monthly deferment VAT and postponed VAT and duty reallocation spreadsheet and uploading the journals to Agresso.

- Additional and ad hoc responsibilities will be required within reason to support the needs and requirements of the Financial Reporting, Tax & Treasury team.

Resolving queries arising from import/export service users across the University and import agents engaged by the University

- Monitoring and processing all emails in the University's Import mailbox quickly and efficiently, resolving internal queries largely independently and escalating more complex queries to the Tax Analyst.

- Dealing with all enquiries from customs agents quickly and efficiently. This could include queries relating to customs procedure codes, tariff classifications, duty rates and any other documentation requirements, and identifying areas of risk where assistance is needed from the Tax Analyst

Identifying and applying for possible VAT and duty reliefs

- Allocating the correct VAT relief certificates and raising manual zero-rate certificates for eligible goods.

- Applying to HMRC for the Duty Relief (NIRU) Certificate when it is deemed necessary.

Personal development and commitment to study

- Start a three-year training contract to study, and gain the required work experience, for professional tax qualifications (ATT and then CTA). Further details noted in the other section below.

- Develop knowledge of the University's structure, Tax, VAT, accounting systems and statutory reporting obligations.

- Develop data analysis skills, in particular use of Excel.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Evidence of successful prior study for academic or vocational qualifications.

A2 Good level of IT literacy particularly MS Office.

A3 Good undergraduate degree or equivalent with a commitment to commence a professional tax qualification.

Desirable:

B1 Working knowledge of the Agresso system.

B2 Some knowledge and understanding of tax and accounting procedures.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 4, £22,681 - £25,138 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and fixed term for up to 36 months
