As a department, the Office of Residential Life believes essential learning takes place beyond the classroom. We endeavor to provide and sustain a healthy, inclusive environment which fosters and encourages co-curricular learning, community ownership, civility, and respect. The department oversees all 1,700 residential students on campus, including several theme houses and Living Learning Communities.

The Graduate Assistant for Residential Life at Wheaton plays a critical role in supporting the department's mission. Responsibilities include managing departmental communications, serving in the on call rotation supporting RA staff, and managing a variety of departmental projects.

This live-on position receives an unfurnished one-bedroom apartment with wireless internet and utilities included. This position has the flexibility to work virtually during some hours and responsibilities.

JOB EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

On Call Support

  • Serve on the GA/RLC on call rotation
  • Advise Resident Advisors and Campus Safety on crisis response
  • Respond as needed to situations that arise and write corresponding incident reports
  • Managing Departmental Communications

  • Assist with communications from the residential life inbox
  • Develop marketing and communication materials for large scale events and initiatives
  • Collaborate with SAIL office on developing social media content
  • Housing Operations

  • Assist with opening, closing, and break planning
  • Coordinate information sessions surrounding RA selection and Housing Selection
  • Support room change process and assignments via StarRez Housing Software
  • Resource and Referral

  • Refer students to campus partners and resources
  • Provide information about University Code of Conduct and Student Handbook as necessary
  • Monitor and report concerns to supervisor and/or the staff members on call
  • Follow up with maintenance and facilities issues as they arise; ensure that RA staff are also proactively addressing facilities issues
  • Other projects may be assigned/based on individual skillset

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    The following terms must be accepted in order to serve in the position.

  • Availability: The Graduate Assistant is expected to work 20 hours per week on weeks the college is open during the academic year. The position start date is Monday, August 7th, 2023 and the end date is Monday, May 21st, 2024
  • Compensation: The Graduate Assistant will receive $18 per hour (20 hrs/week), an unfurnished one-bedroom apartment with utilities, including wireless internet, included. The Graduate Assistant will also receive $500 a semester in Lyon Bucks.
  • Holidays, Breaks and Vacation Periods: The GA is expected to remain on campus to complete residence hall closing for at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters, but may leave campus once closing operations are completed. The GA is not required to remain on campus during Thanksgiving or Spring Break periods.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking graduate program
  • 1 year of experience in a student leadership position in higher education
  • Availability for up to twenty hours per week, including some weekend responsibilities
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in residential life
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of and a commitment to working with a diverse student population
  • Ability to work independently and effectively on multiple tasks
  • Willingness to be part of a team
