This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest departments within the University of Oxford and one of the leading Physics departments in the world.
We are looking for an on site First line IT Support Technician to provide in person 1st line support as part of a team of IT staff who provide services and support to all staff within the department (over 1500 staff, students and long-term visitors). Although the post holder will respond to requests from anywhere in the department, the primary responsibility will be to users based on the West site IT Office. IT requirements change routinely and the post holder will be expected to respond to the need for new solutions and technologies.
This post is permanent.
The sub-departments include staff and graduate students and responsibility for first line IT support rests with this post and another IT support officer based on the East site and two senior IT officers in the team.
The role will primarily support the use of Windows desktop computers, laptops and other mobile devices. Systems currently used include, Windows, macOS and Linux. The postholder will provide support of existing IT solutions, including maintenance and user support for both hardware and software and installation, setup and delivery of new desktop systems and services. The post holder will be expected to become familiar with the basic operation of the departmental network so that diagnostics and basic repairs can be performed.
The successful candidate will need to have experience with Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. Excellent communication skills and experience of building, modifying and troubleshooting PC hardware and components. A willingness and ability to understand new technologies and a desire to undergo training in new areas.
Windows systems administrations experience, some knowledge of macOS and or Linux derivatives and experience in working in an academic environment would be desired but not essential.
A minimum of a BTEC, degree or equivalent relevant practical equivalent.
