Background
The post will be in the Oxford Brookes Centre for Bioimaging, which is part of the School of Biological and Medical Sciences. The Centre for Bioimaging houses state-of-the- art light and electron microscopes, sample preparation areas, a CAT II tissue culture lab and molecular biology labs. Some of the main microscopy research groups are located in the same building, allowing for a high level of interaction and collaboration with our internal user base. We also host external academic and commercial clients, host training workshops and undergraduate project students. The centre hosts a wide range of users, supporting external grants and is internationally renowned for its microscopy work. We are also one of 7 UK sites within the Eurobioimaging network.
Role
We are seeking a highly motivated electron microscopy specialist who will lead the electron microscopy side of our Centre. Research groups at Oxford Brookes cover a wide range of topics including mammalians cells, virus work, plant cell biology and eukaryotic parasites. They undertake a wide-range of standard and advanced techniques on our electron microscopes including fixation, ultramicrotomy sectioning, TEM, SEM as well as more advanced techniques for high pressure freezing and serial block face scanning electron microscopy. The main responsibilities will be to provide training and support to scientists, ensuring the smooth running of the microscopes, assistance with data collection and analysis.
The ideal candidate should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Biological subject and is looking to build a career in electron microscopy. They will have a firm background in a cell biology subject and hands-on experience on imaging biological samples using transmission electron microscopes and experience in ultramicrotomy sectioning. Training in other techniques will be provided as needed. Excellent organisational and communication skills, the ability to work as part of a team as well as a willingness to help users are essential.
