Reporting to: Director of International Surgical Training Programmes

About this post:

The International Medical Graduate Training Initiative (IMGTI), has been developed as a joint collaborative venture between National Doctors Training and Planning (NDTP) and the Forum of Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies in Ireland. As part of the IMGTI, RCSI delivers the International Surgical Training Programmes (ISTPs). The programmes provide surgical speciality training for outstanding international surgical trainees at RCSI-accredited training sites in Ireland.

Over the past 3 years, the ISTP has been restricted to Fellowship Training (i.e. training for surgeons who have already completed Residency Training in their home country). However, the programme has grown significantly and is now entering a truly exciting phase of its evolution. As a result of our rapid growth and expansion, we now wish to appoint an Education Lead who will drive the educational support for our international programmes. The Education Lead will play a key role in supporting our international programmes and will contribute to the future development of this strategically important initiative for RCSI.

The Education Lead will have primary responsibility for ensuring that all participants on the RCSI International Surgical Training Programmes will have a world-class education and training experience in keeping with the goals and objectives of the training curriculum (ISCP). The Education Lead will therefore be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the trainees and for monitoring their training progress whilst they are in post in Ireland. The Education Lead will work closely with the Training Programme Director to ensure that all Fellows verifiably achieve their prescribed competencies through a robust assessment framework.

General duties of the post:

The primary purpose of this post is to ensure that RCSI delivers a “best-in- class” education and training experience for all trainees on our various International Surgical Training Programmes. The Education Lead will be expected to develop, oversee (in collaboration with the Training Programme Director) and help to deliver a comprehensive education programme which ensures that trainees meet their expected competencies.

The curriculum for the international trainees is the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP). This is an “outcomes-based curriculum”, meaning that the competencies are clearly defined and there is an Assessment Framework which verifies and documents achievement of those competencies.

The model of training used in RCSI is an “experiential model” whereby most training takes place in the clinical placement and this is supported by a comprehensive simulation-based education programme in RCSI. The Education Lead will be responsible for ensuring that there is a seamless interface between the clinical site training and the RCSI-based education programme, so that each trainee meets their competencies and this is fully and verifiably documented in their training portfolio.

The Education Lead will work closely with the other members of the International Training team in further developing and enhancing our educational offering.
