Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

The University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine is an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care approved residency training facility for large animal resident (3 years) and fellowship (2 years) programs. This is an intermediate position structured to suit applicants who have completed entry-level DVM positions (internship and residency) prior to applying for faculty positions or private practice equivalent. The caseload is approximately 85% equine, the remainder being primarily small ruminants, new world camelids, and cattle. The incumbent will be mentored by two emergency and critical care clinicians (DACVECC-LA/DACVS-LA). The emergency critical care service is supported by four surgery clinicians, four internal medicine clinicians, two-three surgery residents, three internal medicine residents, and three rotating interns. On completion of the program, the incumbent will have completed the requirements for credentialing to take the board certification exam in large animal emergency and critical care.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • The incumbent will have a valid license (regular Georgia or faculty) to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Georgia or be willing to obtain and maintain a valid license (regular Georgia or faculty) to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Georgia.
  • Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with faculty and technical administrative staff.
  • Communicate effectively with referring veterinarians, house officers, and veterinary students.
  • Professional – to be considered for the residency position, incumbent will have a DVM or equivalent degree; have 4 years post-DVM clinical experience with preference for significant experience in clinical, laboratory, and didactic teaching of veterinary students including the completion of an equine or large animal surgery or medicine residency approved by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or Internal Medicine, respectively.

    Instruction:

  • Participate in clinical teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents.
  • The incumbent will participate primarily in the department's relevant large animal emergency critical care rotations.
  • A small amount of classroom and laboratory teaching in veterinary student courses will also be needed.
  • Instructional responsibilities will be primarily under the supervision of the two emergency and critical care clinicians.
