Deputy Service Manager

University Information Services (UIS) provides the digital infrastructure, business information and computing services at the heart of one of the world's top universities. The University of Cambridge has a bold ambition to use digitalisation to transform education and research, and UIS' team of developers, designers, testers, analysts and support staff is leading this exciting work.

The user administration team within the UIS is a small and busy team providing accounts for the whole University. The Deputy Service Manager plays a crucial role in supporting the User Administration Manager with all aspects of user account management within the University.

This includes tasks such as creating, modifying, and deleting user accounts, managing user access permissions and ensuring compliance with University policies and security standards. A large part of the role is communication directly with users, colleges and inter-departmental communication.

You'll get the chance to collaborate and interact with some of the finest minds in the world, sharing data, insight and expertise to make a meaningful difference to the University's success.

Responsibilities

User Account Management:

  • Process user account requests (creation, modification, deletion) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Verify user information and ensure compliance with the university policies.
  • Assign appropriate access permissions based on user roles and responsibilities.
  • Reset user passwords and troubleshoot login issues.
  • Manage group memberships and access controls.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date user account records.
  • Security and Compliance:

  • Respond to security incidents promptly and effectively.
  • Stay up-to-date on relevant security threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Support:

  • Provide first-line support to users regarding user accounts and access permissions.
  • Answer user questions and address concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Project Management:

  • Assist with the implementation of new user account management systems and processes.
  • Participate in projects related to user access governance and identity management.
  • Document user account management processes and procedures.
  • What you will need:

  • Experience with user administration tools and systems: This could include Active Directory, Entra ID, or other commercial Identity and Access Management systems used for creating, managing, and provisioning user accounts.
  • Understanding of user permissions and access control: You'll need to know how to assign different levels of access to users based on their job roles.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting user account issues: Users will inevitably run into problems with their accounts, so you'll need to be able to diagnose and resolve these issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: You'll need to be able to communicate clearly and concisely with both technical and non-technical users.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
