Salary: AM3 £77,764 to £82,980 pa depending on skills and experience

Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

The School of Creative Arts is one of six Schools of the University of Hertfordshire and is a Strategic Business Unit of UH. From the inception of the University in 1992, the School has gone from strength to strength and has developed a strong international and national reputation for its creative, industry-engaged teaching and research. The School is based on the College Lane Campus and has an excellent range of facilities, workshops and studios. This is a brand new post, initiated to provide additional support to the Dean of School.

Main duties and responsibilities

The role of Deputy Dean of School is to support the Dean in providing academic leadership and management. The Deputy Dean, working closely with the Heads of Department and Associated Deans of School, will support the Dean in development of strategic plans to achieve the highest standards of learning and teaching, research, Knowledge Exchange, enterprise, scholarship and student experience. The Deputy Dean will then share responsibility for leading the operationalisation of the School's strategic plans.

The Deputy Dean will take Executive responsibility for particular functions and lead elements of the School's work. The specific functions will be subject to discussion, change and agreement between the Deputy Dean and Dean of School, and will include elements of the following core operational activities of the School:

  • Alignment with strategic priorities and Key Performance Indicators
  • Management of teaching and learning resources, including responsibility for devolved budgets
  • Overseeing development of buildings, facilities, and the School estate
  • Assist with student appeals and other student or staff disciplinary investigations
  • Communicate effectively with all staff and students
  • Formulate curricular proposals and proposals for external academic partnerships and collaborations
  • Establish and maintain external links and networks
  • Recruitment of staff and students, including both Home and International students
  • The Deputy Dean will make an impactful and positive contribution to the Senior Leadership Team of the School and will achieve this using the University values of Friendliness, Ambition, Collaboration, Enterprise and Student Success. When and where requested by the Dean or University, the Deputy Dean will act as Pro-Dean.

    Skills and experience required

    You will have proven expertise in academic studies in education, and a demonstrable track record of teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, with the ability to use appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods. You will have the ability to contribute to the design of engaging and intellectually stimulating modules, and a motivated approach towards your work and the work of the School.

    You will also have excellent communication skills and the ability to form good working relationships on an internal and external basis. You will be committed to the ongoing development of teaching and learning skills, in particular the growing use of technology in relation to blended learning activities and have good self-management and time management skills.

    Ideally you will also have an established or emerging research profile in an area of academic study relevant to the school, and experience of programme leadership and/or line management.

    Qualifications required

    You will have an undergraduate degree in a subject relevant to the disciplines within the School. You will ideally be a Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy) and will be committed to becoming a Senior or Principal Fellow of Advance HE within your first 2 years in post.

    Four-year tenured appointment as Deputy Dean of School The successful candidate will be appointed as Deputy Dean of School on a four-year renewable basis, subject to performance. There is no guarantee that this appointment will be extended or renewed beyond the four-year period and if it is not, the post holder will revert to a role commensurate with current responsibilities and pay.
