Job Purpose

To assist in classes/sessions in subject specialism on the demonstration of simple laboratory methods for Postgraduate Taught/Masters students. To support teaching through the demonstration of exercises in line with agreed learning outcomes of the course. To offer assistance, as appropriate, including the provision of detailed explanations of how the activity relates to the wider area of study.

To effectively and efficiently undertake a range of duties associated with the teaching of full time and part time students and associated administration as requested by the Head of School/Subject in order to contribute to the College/School/Subject Area objectives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To demonstrate in classes/sessions in the subject specialism of laboratory skills and to answer questions related to those demonstrations, including the provision of detailed explanations of how the activity relates to the wider area of study.

2. To assist/give guidance, where required, to students who are carrying out practical exercises.

3. To be aware of any health and safety implications, and take action to maintain a safe environment, raising any concerns with the course organiser.

4. To contribute to the development of teaching material and workbooks.

5. Where required, to assist in marking student tests set by the course organiser using defined marking criteria where marking requires little or no interpretation.

6. Where required, to provide factual feedback to students and the course organiser.

7. Where required, to ensure that equipment, exercise or process is functional and/or material for demonstrations, exercises etc is prepared before the start of a session.

8. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

9. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

10. To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, World Changers Together

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 10 (Honours Degree) in subject specialism or equivalent.

A2. Expert knowledge of relevant subject/class/session.

A3. Awareness of learning outcomes of course.

C1. Excellent communication skills.

Experience

E1. Previous experience of demonstrating to students.
