Birkbeck, University of London, is currently looking for Demonstrators to support the teaching on the BSc and MSc Psychology programmes in 2025. This is an excellent opportunity to support the teaching team within the School of Psychological Sciences.

You will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck Psychological Science students, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies. You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge in the subject areas to be taught.

We are currently looking for Demonstrators to support the modules:

  • Statistics for Psychologists (Level 7: Monday 2-5pm, 13 January to 24 March (excluding 17 February). Duties include assisting students as they work through pre-prepared pen and paper / computer based introductory research methods exercises including tasks about descriptive statistics, simple inferential statistical tests (t-test, chi-square, one-way and two-way ANOVA, linear regression, correlation), parts of a lab report, writing a pre-registration. Marking of lab reports also required from Demonstrators for an additional payment. Further information: Marie Smith, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, [email protected]

  • Introduction to Research Methods (Level 4; Wednesday 6-9pm) 15 January to 9 July (excluding 19 February and 4 June, and one week in June). Duties include assisting students as they work through pre-prepared pen and paper / computer based introductory research methods exercises including tasks about descriptive statistics, simple inferential statistical tests (t-test, chi-square, one way anova), parts of a lab report, writing a pre-registration.   • Research Methods 1 (Level 5; Mondays 6-9pm) from 13 January to 24 March (excluding 17 February). Further information: Silvia Seghezzi, Lecturer, [email protected]

  • Principles of Experimental Psychology (level 7; Fridays 6-9pm), from 17 January to 28 March (excluding 21 February and two weeks TBD). Duties include assisting in the supervision of group projects. Previous experience of working as a Demonstrator supporting research methods courses would be beneficial for this role.     Most individuals undertaking these roles will be employed as part of their general academic development to obtain practical teaching experience and will be undertaking this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies.

    Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:

  • A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Advanced experience in using a range of statistical techniques and report writing suitable for quantitative psychological science research.
  • Awareness of the needs of part-time adult learners and ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.
  • Confident presentation skills and ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.
  • A good working knowledge of SPSS.
  • Experience of marking coursework and/or exams.

    Remuneration

    Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £23.96 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6. Marking is paid separately for these roles.
