We are recruiting for a voluntary lay (independent/non-executive) member to join our governing body (Council) for an initial term of three years from 1 August 2024.

Our strategy, Creating Better Futures. Together , is focussed on how our work at Loughborough University can contribute to improving the lives of individuals and creating a healthier, more sustainable and more inclusive society.

About the role:

As a lay member of our governing body, you will be integral to us achieving our strategy.

You'll help to support our decision making, challenge our thinking and hold us to account.

You will bring with you a range of perspectives and lived experience to board- level discussions helping us to respond more effectively to internal and external challenges.

We are particularly interested in hearing from you if you have executive level experience and expertise in one or more of the following:

  • people and culture
  • anti-discriminatory practices and a working knowledge and understanding of EDI principles
  • knowledge and experience of regional economic development and regional governance
  • marketing and communications
  • Ideally, you'll have:

  • executive/non-executive experience at a senior level in large and complex organisations (all sector backgrounds welcomed)

  • a passion for higher education and personal values that align to our strategy

  • good interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with a broad range of people
  • a strong commitment to the seven principles of public life (drawn up by the “Nolan” Committee on Standards in Public Life)
  • a willingness to commit to the duties and responsibilities of Council members(details included in the Candidate Pack)

  • At Loughborough we value the voluntary nature of governing body membership and ensure a manageable time commitment of approximately 10-15 days per year.


  • Council meets four times annually, with three in person meetings in March, June and October (Away Day), and one online meeting in November.

  • Lunch is provided for all in-person meetings and plenty of opportunities to attend post meetings/evening meals out.

  • You will be invited to serve on at least one other specialist corporate committee such as Human Resources Committee. Allowing y ou to work closely with a smaller group of university stakeholders and apply your personal experience to support policies and decisions.

  • You will have the opportunity to attend our annual joint Senate and Council dinner.

  • You will be invited to a range of social events which are a great way to learn more about Loughborough and network with others.

  • Whilst the roles are not remunerated, we'll cover reasonable expenses which will be reimbursed in line with the University's expenses policy.

    Shortlisting Process:

    The Council's Governance and Nominations Committee, chaired by Christine Hodgson, Chair of Council, will finalise a shortlist at its meeting at the end of June 2024. If it is agreed at this meeting to take your expression forward, you will be invited to participate in informal discussions with senior staff of the University and members of the governing body.
