People & Culture (P&C) plays a critical role in supporting the University achieve its strategic priorities through effective workforce governance, compliance, and organisational capability.

The Workplace Relations and Employment Compliance portfolio provides enterprise leadership across employment compliance, workforce governance, and assurance activities. Operating within UWA’s devolved workforce model, the function provides centralised oversight, specialist expertise, monitoring, and assurance to support compliant, consistent, and defensible workforce practices across Schools and directorates.

The Employment Compliance function is responsible for strengthening the University’s employment compliance framework through proactive assurance activity, compliance monitoring, remediation oversight, governance uplift, and continuous improvement. The function works collaboratively across People & Culture, Payroll, Finance, Legal Services, Internal Audit, and operational areas to support sustainable compliance capability and ongoing institutional self-assurance.

About the opportunity

The Compliance Manager plays an important role in supporting the implementation of the University's employment compliance framework and assurance activities. Working closely with the Employment Compliance team, the successful candidates will analyse employment legislation, industrial instruments, University policies, workforce data, payroll requirements, audit findings and operational practices to provide advice and develop controls relating to employee entitlements and conditions. The roles will also work closely with colleagues across P&C and operational areas to design and strengthen controls, uplift compliance capability, and support consistent, practical and defensible workforce practices. 

About you

  • Develop and implement employment compliance programs, including risk mitigation strategies, monitoring activities, remediation approaches, governance enhancements and assurance frameworks.
  • Lead and manage complex employment compliance matters from identification through assessment, investigation and resolution, ensuring outcomes are strategic, consistent and aligned with legislative, policy and procedural requirements.
  • Oversee monitoring and analysis of workforce practices relating to employee entitlements, payroll compliance, classifications, engagement arrangements, leave, superannuation and workforce governance, using findings to inform risk-based decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of employment compliance standards, controls, procedures, templates, monitoring mechanisms and program documentation.
  • Provide strategic advice to People & Culture and operational stakeholders on the interpretation and application of employment legislation, industrial instruments, University policies and external regulatory obligations.
