Curtin University, a forward-thinking institution, is now leveraging major platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and ServiceNow to deliver cutting-edge digital experiences for our students and staff.

We have an exciting position available for an experienced Cloud FinOps Engineer to join our high-performing Digital and Technology Services team. Working within the Digital Platforms stream, a key component of the university's digital platform, you will drive financial efficiency in cloud operations.

Your new role

Reporting to the FinOps Lead, you will play a critical role in providing sound advice and support to managers to ensure the University's ICT achieves exceptional return on cloud spend.

You will work closely with a range of stakeholders including AWS partners, Finance, Procurement and our Engineering teams to actively monitor cloud spend and understand consumption trends and data. You will develop optimisation and cloud financial management automation initiatives, prepare financial reports, monitor and track spend to date and support the University to increase efficiency.

We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking professional with a proactive approach, a thirst for continuous learning, and a deep sense of curiosity. The ideal candidate will be driven to explore innovative solutions, uncover cost- saving opportunities, and champion optimization initiatives. This is your opportunity to be part of a leading FinOps institution, recognised as one of Australia's leaders in financial operations and cloud cost management by AWS 2024.

As the Cloud FinOps Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Implementing and maintaining FinOps practices and methodologies, with a focus on analysing cloud usage and spending data to identify areas for cost optimisation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, finance and operations teams to establish financial accountability.
  • Evaluate system generated optimisation recommendations and translate financial insights into actionable delivery epics and stories.
  • Drive optimisation through discovery, design, development, and operation project phases.
  • Evaluate technology implementations comprehensively at Curtin, reporting on performance against goals, and recommending further continuous improvement actions.
  • Undertake other activities which the incumbent might reasonably be expected to do, and which are consistent with the accountabilities and responsibilities as listed above.
  • We are looking for someone with:

  • A relevant degree in finance, engineering, mathematics or computer science and extensive relevant experience.
  • Sound knowledge and experience with cloud management platforms, cloud billing systems, cloud reporting and monitoring tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Power BI and QuickSight.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and facilitation skills.
  • Strong analytical, influencing, and problem-solving abilities with clear attention to detail.
  • Sound knowledge with finance control and budget management.
  • Commitment to continuous learning of the latest cost optimization strategies and technologies; gather insights and develop new opinions and strategies around cloud optimization.
  • Work Requirements:

  • Must have current work rights in Australia.
  • Based in Perth, WA or have confirmed plans to relocate. Relocation and sponsorship support are not available.
