Clinical Tutor / Senior Registrar in Psychiatry, Full -Time (0.5FTE/0.5FTE Joint Appointment), Fixed Term

The School of Medicine at the University of Galway are looking for suitably qualified and experienced Clinical Tutor / Senior Registrar in Psychiatry.

The School of Medicine has an enrolment of c.1000 students, including many from overseas. University College Hospital, Galway is conveniently located beside the University campus and is the major teaching hospital.

The purpose of this post is to support the Professor of Psychiatry in the delivery of psychiatry teaching to undergraduate medical students, course organisation and assessment of students' competence. In addition, the post- holder will have a prominent role in research and administration and will undertake clinical duties in the Galway Mental Health Services under the clinical supervision of the Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Director. The post would be suitable for work towards a higher degree (MMedSci or MD). The post will be based in the Discipline of Psychiatry and the post-holder will carry out the duties of the post under the direction of the Head of the School or of an authorised senior member of the staff of the School. The post-holder will support the undergraduate teaching activities in the School of Medicine specifically in relation to the Psychiatry and Advanced Clinical Skills and Professional Development modules and undertake clinical duties in the Galway Mental Health Services. They will work closely with similar post-holders in the disciplines of General Practice, Paediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology as well as with clinical academic colleagues at University of Galway and its regional medical academies to provide co- ordinated development and delivery of specialist clinical education in the undergraduate medical programme.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in research and be involved in the formation of research collaborations with other academic departments and clinical staff as appropriate. They will also be expected to be involved in supervision of research with undergraduate and postgraduate students. They will ideally have some research and clinical teaching experience. Support will be available, as appropriate, to aid in the development of specialist educational skills. A commitment to quality in teaching will be sought and an outline understanding of medical education theory and practice is essential. They will need to be able to work with colleagues from diverse disciplines.

The successful applicant will be a half-time employee of the University of Galway and half-time employee with the HSE and will be appointed at the appropriate rate on the Clinical Tutor salary scale for one year. The fixed- term post will be effective from 8th July 2024. They will be a registered medical practitioner who has completed their general professional training.

Salary: the appointment will be made on the Clinical Tutor 2 scale: €75,257 - €92,107.
