Clinical Research Fellow in Vitreoretinal Surgery

Applicants are invited to apply for a Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship at Oxford Eye Hospital reporting to Ms Jasmina Kapetanovic https: // www. ndcn.ox.ac.uk/team/jasmina-kapetanovic, a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon and a Principal Investigator at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences https: // www. ndcn.ox.ac.uk. Alongside Professor MacLaren, Ms Kapetanovic has been at the forefront of innovations for vitreo-retinal surgical techniques, including gene therapy and robotic eye surgery. Ms Kapetanovic leads the Precision Surgery Sub-Theme https: // oxfordbrc.nihr.ac.uk/research-themes/surgical-innovation-technology- and-evaluation at the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) where we are developing more precise surgical methods including new robot-assisted techniques, currently not possible with manual approach.

The post would be ideally suited for ophthalmology trainees coming to the end of their specialist training and seeking to gain further experience in vitreo- retinal surgery and related research. In the first instance, the fellowship is a mixture of surgical and research components, and the fellow will have opportunities to assist in NHS and trial surgeries including gene therapy and robotic eye surgery. Depending on the level of experience, the fellow can take part in the NHS on-call rota, alongside full-time clinical fellows. The fellowship has a strong research component, with protected time to conduct research and run surgically related clinical trials at the Clinical Eye Research Group https: // www. ndcn.ox.ac.uk/research/clinical- ophthalmologyresearch-group. In addition, there will be time to get involved in other research programmes as well as opportunities to gain a higher degree, for those wishing to pursue an academic career.

It is essential that you are a specialist Trainee in Ophthalmology with interest in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery. and have GMC registration with a valid licence to practice. It is desirable that you have a PhD/DPhil or an equivalent research degree (e.g. an MD) in the biomedical sciences or a related field and have a background in clinical research or prior experience in conducting clinical trials.
