The Science Director, as a member of the LIST Executive Committee, co-develops a long-term vision and strategy for LIST, actively works in its implementation, oversees, organises, coordinates, and monitors all related scientific and research processes to achieve goals and creates the framework in which LIST will be able to grow, creating the greatest possible added value for its various stakeholders.

In line with the LIST strategy, the Science Director envisions, develops, and implements strategies and policies aimed at improving and managing effective and streamlined research and development processes. To do so, the Science Director will lead and manage among others a team of eminent scientists having a broad technology and innovation overview and IP specialists.

How will you contribute?

In a matrix organisation, your role involves overseeing the acquisition, the reporting of all the science and development projects and activities within LIST and the support for the scientific execution of these projects where the CEO adjoint will oversee the acquisition and reporting of the contract and co- funded research projects and services. Together with the Deputy CEO – valorization function, you will coach the Heads of Unit and together with the Deputy CEO and the Heads of Unit steer the life cycle of research at LIST. The input of the Deputy CEO into the development process of the research and innovation activities will be from the demand side – pull side, while the input from the Scientific Director will be from the scientific side – push side. The Science Director will overview the lower TRL of the LIST research agenda.

Research & Development:

  • Define and introduce a sound R&D strategy in line with LIST's goals, together with the Deputy CEO in terms of life cycle of research and ultimate revenue and growth targets.
  • Lead a research support office. The Science director is responsible for providing an effective, efficient and proactive support structure to help and advice researchers on project acquisition, research execution, research management, result dissemination and exploitation. monitoring of their quality and progress, risk analysis.
  • The Science Director develops and maintains good contacts with national and international funding agencies, other research organisations and potential sponsors.
  • Responsible for research data and knowledge management
  • Coordinates LIST's Doctoral education program
  • Lead thorough scientific research to identify trends, opportunities, and potential threats, proposed adaptations to LIST's research lines accordingly.
  • Supervises IP patents search and is responsible for the patenting and safeguarding of relevant LIST research, be it of a material or immaterial property asset nature (e.g. software, living collections, trademarks, …)
  • Leadership:

  • Works in close coordination with the other members of the Executive Committee and create healthy collaborative links between your team and the rest of the organisation.
  • Inspires the team under your responsibility. Coach, develop, and empower managers and employees. Lead and support talent management processes, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, and career development.
  • Excellent communicator and networker.
  • Represents LIST nationally and internationally on the R&D scene, at major scientific conferences, at the EU commission, …
  • Represent LIST in front of partners and stakeholders. You are wired into relevant scientific communities; you have a broad and holistic view on LIST's research activities. Create and nurture institutional relationships. Communicate LIST's RDI activity and results to stakeholders and the broader community.

    You have an international reputation in the sector of public and/or private research and innovation. You have proven management and governance skills, and the ability to engender trust, respect, and credibility.

    Your ability to envision strategies, establish priorities, and influence others to achieve strategic goals will be highly valuable.

    You demonstrated experience in building relationships with a diverse range of internal and external constituencies, you have a strong ability to steer high level research through procedures and influence and the capacity for managing and leading people, enforcing accountability, and empowering the managers and employees under their responsibility.

    Additionally, you should have:

  • A sound knowledge of technology acquisition, research and development and dissemination of innovation and research.
  • Relevant experience on putting in place communication and marketing plans of research and innovation activities.
  • Strong analytical, critical, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Good communicator on R&D activities, in a broad setting and with a large outreach.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience is required, preferably in innovation- driven or research technology organisations (experience in an RTO is a plus), and at least 5 years of experience in senior management positions.
  • Finally, you should hold a PhD degree and being fluent in English and French. Luxembourgish would be considered an advantage.
