About the Department of Academic Advising

Academic Advising is a developmental process assisting students in the clarification of their educational goals and the implementation of an educational plan to realize these goals. This requires collaboration with University staff and faculty to keep abreast of programs and services through presentations, individual consultation, assessment and referral. Advisors play a key role in student retention, advising new and continuing students throughout their tenure at Mount Royal University.

About the Role

Acting as advocates for students throughout their enrolment process/attendance Advisors must be knowledgeable about all aspects of University programs, policies, procedures, services, dates and deadlines related to a student's educational career.

The incumbent must balance a load that consists of one-to-one, group and distance advising in addition to tracking advisee records and operational project work. Regular participation and attendance in team meetings and campus advising meetings is encouraged, as is maintaining membership in NACADA - the Global Community for Academic Advising and/or the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) and adhering to those Professional Advising Standards.

This is a full-time permanent position working 35 hours per week and will be located in the Bisset School of Business.

Responsibilities Advising Students
  • Meeting with students to provide developmental advising that enables them to define and develop realistic educational and career goals, and plan an educational program consistent with their abilities, interests, and resources.
  • Monitoring students' progress towards meeting their educational goals and proactively contact students at critical points in their academic development.
  • Creating a learner-centred environment to inform students of the nature of the Advisor/Student/Faculty relationship, and the roles and responsibilities of each.
  • Providing students with information to help them interpret and understand academic policies, procedures, and admission and program requirements.
  • Collaborating with the campus community to develop student self-help resources and advising resources.
  • Referring students to other campus resources as required.
  • Coordinating and participating in advising events, which may include Open House, New Student Registration, New Student Orientation, New Student Advising workshops, and others.
  • Project Participation/Faculty Advising/Consulting
  • Advising and advocating for changes to curriculum.
  • Informing, and participating in, faculty program reviews, faculty committees and department meetings.
  • Developing and delivering advising operations for the faculty (managing cyclical demand and maintaining student accessibility).
  • Analyzing information to evaluate services and improve operations and conducting periodic analysis of advisement-related data at the request of the Dean.
  • Designing and creating program planning and promotional materials, including web content and content for social media channels.
  • Collaborating with the Office of Student Success on student retention initiatives.
  • Training new advisors, as well as acting as a subject-matter expert within the Bissett School of Business and Enrolment Services.
  • Administrative Duties
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential documentation of advising conversations.
  • Maintaining a high level of knowledge of Banner as it relates to admissions, transfer credit and record keeping.
  • Using, testing and recommending changes to University systems (Banner, Degreeworks).
  • Qualifications
  • Three or Four Year Bachelor Degree or Equivalent in a relevant field.
  • 2 - 3 years of related experience, including working with clients on a one-to-one basis.
  • Experience in a post-secondary environment, particularly an understanding and familiarity with Admissions and Recruitment, Academic Advising, Transfer Credit, Credit Registration and Records would be extremely valuable.
  • Ability to work with and support a diverse group of students with varying needs and abilities.

    Salary: $55,982 - 70,841 per annum
