Job description

British Sign Language Teachers (Temporary Assignment)

Due to increasing demand, we are looking to recruit a number of British Sign Language (BSL) teachers for extra-curricular language courses commencing from January 2025 to supplement our existing teaching team.

Successful applicants will be teaching groups of adults (members of the public, students and staff) in the Evening Language Programme as follows:

Term 2 from w/c 13th Jan - w/c 17th March 2025 Term 3 from w/c 28th April - w/c 30th June 2025

Teachers will be engaged on a temporary basis under the University's terms and conditions for engaging temporary workers (details available on our website). The rate of pay is calculated according to published hourly rates, and is inclusive of holiday pay. Courses may be delivered in the evening or during the day, on campus or online, subject to the course type.

We would also be pleased to hear from BSL teachers with availability from other parts of the UK who may be interested in teaching on-line.

The University of Exeter offers BSL courses as follows:

Levels of study

British Sign Language (BSL) is available at four levels (introductory/ BSL Level I/ BSL Level II, BSL Level III) as well as specific “BSL in the Workplace” courses.

Teaching

Level 1,2&3 courses lead to a qualification accredited by Signature, the leading UK awarding body for British Sign Language.

Key Attributes for the Role:

  • Proven Experience in Teaching British Sign Language : Ability to design and deliver engaging and well-structured language programmes to diverse groups of learners, from beginner to intermediate (BSL Levels 1-3). Experience with both face-to-face and online teaching is essential.
  • BSL Teaching Qualifications: Must hold a recognized teaching qualification from Signature (or equivalent) for BSL Levels 1-3, with the ability to guide students through Signature exams. Teaching higher BSL levels (4 and above) is an added advantage.
  • Strong English Proficiency : A minimum of B2 level English to ensure clear communication, especially with learners from different linguistic backgrounds.
  • Clear and Effective Communication : Ability to explain concepts and instructions clearly, ensuring students can easily follow and engage with the lessons. Strong skills in making complex ideas accessible for learners at all levels.
  • Organized and Structured Approach : Proven ability to establish clear systems, guidelines, and expectations for learners, creating a structured learning path to help them meet their goals effectively.
  • Engaging Teaching Style : Creative, enthusiastic, and able to develop motivating lessons that inspire students to learn and progress in their BSL skills.
  • Tech-Savvy : Comfortable using a variety of online tools and platforms for remote teaching, with experience in adapting teaching materials for online delivery.
  • Personable & Approachable: A dynamic and friendly personality, able to build strong rapport with learners, create a supportive learning environment, and foster positive student engagement.
