Position SummaryThe Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System (TS) or a multi-year renewable Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment position in Veterinary Cardiology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications and experience.
The Cardiology service has a strong program with a busy caseload, residency training program, interventional and surgical cardiovascular therapies, and active research programs. Currently, the service is staffed with two full-time cardiologists, a cardiology resident, a cardiology intern, and a dedicated cardiology nurse. State-of-the-art equipment and facilities currently available include Phillips EPIQ, GE E90 (including transesophageal and intra- cardiac echocardiography capabilities), multiple pacemaker programmers, Lifecard CF Holter recording, and Pathfinder SL computer analyzing software. The Veterinary Medical Center has a recently renovated 2200 sq. ft2 catheterization laboratory with GE Innova imaging. Other imaging modalities available within the hospital include nuclear imaging, MRI, and CT scanner.
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences comprises over 40 faculty providing outstanding patient care with a superb team of highly qualified veterinary nurses. Our teaching hospital, the Veterinary Medical Center, is equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, including ten operating suites, operating microscope, minimally invasive laparoscopy/thoracoscopy, 64-slice helical CT, digital cinefluoroscopy unit, intra-operative C-arm, 3.0 Tesla MRI (being installed), nuclear medicine, linear accelerator, video endoscopy, renal replacement therapy, and ventilator support.
The successful applicant's role will encompass clinical service, education, and research/scholarly activity. The amount of time dedicated to each of these endeavors is flexible and will be geared toward the applicant's interests, strengths, and qualifications. Tenure system appointments require more time dedicated to independent and collaborative, externally funded research, with less time devoted to clinical service. Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University and are predicated on enhancing programs in clinical education, patient care services, and clinical research. Health Programs (HP) appointments emphasize clinical service and teaching, although these positions are flexible to allow ample time for research and scholarly activity. Both tenure system and HP appointments are expected to contribute to the preclinical and clinical education of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing and were created to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services, and clinical research. HP faculty appointed in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences typically have 50-70% of clinical assignments devoted to clinical and preclinical instruction, patient care services, and the general administrative efforts of the Department and College. In addition, HP faculty are expected to be active in research and other scholarly endeavors. Required Qualifications:
Applicants must have a DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan (limited academic and controlled substance licensure is available). Completing an ACVIM-Cardiology residency is a requirement for the appointment though a projected completion date will suffice for the application process.
Desired Qualifications:
Specialty board certification in Cardiology is preferred, but board-eligible candidates will be considered. An advanced research degree, although not required, will be favorably considered. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and staff. The Veterinary Medical Center provides state-of-the-art patient care and enjoys outstanding veterinary technical support and superb facilities, including 35 examination rooms, 13 operating suites, an intensive/critical care unit, a step-down nursing unit, a complete diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy facility, video endoscopy, dentistry, and wound management suites, a physical rehabilitation center, a veterinary social work program, and outpatient mobile hospice services. The intellectual and collegiate environment is enhanced by resident-organized weekly journal clubs, intern and resident seminars, and faculty research presentations.
