Asst/Assoc/Full Professor HP/TS Internal Medicine

Position Summary

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System (TS) or a multi-year renewable Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment position in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, depending on qualifications and experience.

The internal medicine service is focused on exceptional instruction and patient care, supported by a busy caseload and experienced faculty. The successful candidate will join an existing group of 4 internists, 6 residents, and 2.5 dedicated service technicians. The successful candidate's responsibilities will include management of referral cases, supervision and clinical instruction of house officers and students, and a commitment to scholarly contributions in the candidate's area of expertise. Participation in the pre-clinical teaching curriculum as well as contributing to the specialty service leadership is also expected. We are also particularly interested in individuals with interests in endocrinology or nephrology/urology to complement and enhance current expertise, but individuals with any sub- interests in small animal internal medicine are encouraged to apply.

The MSU Veterinary Medical Center is a state-of-the-art and AAHA accredited facility, and it is equipped with GI, pulmonary and genitourinary endoscopic equipment, 64 slice helical CT, digital cinefluoroscopy unit, and on-site MRI and nuclear medicine, amongst other equipment and capabilities. As mentioned above, the small animal internal medicine team at MSU consists of 4 faculty members, 6 residents, and 2.5 technicians. Other specialties are also well- represented in the MSU Veterinary Medical Center and include surgery (both soft tissue and orthopedics), emergency and critical care medicine, cardiology, medical and radiation oncology, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology, rehabilitation, and diagnostic imaging. In addition, diagnostic support for the VMC is provided by the state-of-the-art Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, that perform over a million diagnostic tests per year on ~180k cases and provides a rich resource for collaborative research opportunities.

The role of the successful applicant will encompass clinical service, education, and research/scholarly activity. The amount of time dedicated to each of these endeavors is flexible and will be geared towards the interests, strengths, and qualifications of the applicant. Tenure system appointments require a greater percentage of time dedicated to both independent and collaborative, externally funded research, with less time devoted to clinical service. More information about the Tenure System is available at Tenure System Hiring Information (msu.edu). HP appointments are unique to Michigan State University Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing and were created to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services, and clinical research. HP faculty appointed in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences typically have 50-70% clinical assignments devoted to clinical and pre-clinical instruction, patient care services, and the general administrative efforts of the Department and College. In addition, HP faculty are expected to be active in research and other scholarly endeavors. A complete description of the Michigan State University HP system is available at Health Programs Faculty Appointment System Handbook (msu.edu). Both tenure system and HP appointments are expected to assist in the education of the next generation of veterinary clinicians and clinician scientists, and there will be ample opportunities to participate in the didactic and clinical teaching of veterinary students and house officers.
