Associate Professorship (or Professorship) of Mathematics (with a preference for Numerical Analysis)

The Mathematical Institute proposes to appoint an Associate Professor (or Professor) of Mathematics (with a preference for Numerical Analysis) from 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship at Worcester College, under arrangements described in the attached job description.

The University salary scale has a minimum point of £55,755 per annum. An allowance of £3,155 per annum would be payable upon award of Full Professor title.

The Associate Professor will join a thriving research community of mathematicians at Oxford, at the world-leading Mathematical Institute. They will play a leading role in helping to build further collaborations across the global research community, in addition to engaging with outreach activities to support the department in achieving its strategic aim to improve the diversity of its undergraduate and postgraduate student body, and in particular its gender diversity. They will be responsible for carrying out, disseminating the results of, obtaining funding for, and supervising research at a high international standard in the field of Mathematics, with a preference for Numerical Analysis, and for teaching a range of topics in mathematics via lectures, classes and tutorials. A complete list of duties and responsibilities is set out in the attached job description.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in mathematics or a closely related subject, and will be committed to improving diversity within the discipline. They will demonstrate the ability and/or potential to carry out research at a high international level in mathematics and to teach effectively across a range of topics in mathematics.

The Mathematical Institute is proud to hold a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award and a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our commitment to openness, inclusivity and transparency, we would particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in academic posts at Oxford. The University is committed to equality and valuing diversity.

Activities involving the promotion of diversity in mathematics will be taken into account when balancing overall workload. Departmental duties will be reduced in the first year of the appointment.

The department was awarded an Athena SWAN Silver Award in 2016 in recognition of its commitment to addressing gender inequalities, to tackling the unequal representation of women in science, and to improving career progression for female academics. Our family-friendly policies include the right to apply for flexible working, hybrid working, and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence. We are committed to ensuring an inclusive interview process and will reimburse up to £250 towards any additional care costs (for a dependent child or adult) incurred as a result of attending an interview for this position, which may not be applicable if the interviews are held remotely.

Informal enquiries regarding the application process should be directed to the Recruitment Administrator (email: [email protected]), quoting vacancy reference 176044.
