Department of Sociology, 42-43 Park End Street, Oxford and St John's College

The Department of Sociology is seeking to appoint a full-time Associate Professor in Social Demography in association with a Tutorial Fellowship in Human Sciences at St John's College. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post- holder will be eligible for reappointment to retiring age.

The Associate Professorship post is tenable from the start of 2025/26 academic year or as soon as possible before or thereafter. The appointment will be made in association with a Tutorial Fellowship in Human Sciences at St John's College, further details of the fellowship can be found in the job description. Associate Professor is the main academic career grade at Oxford with a focus on research and teaching, spanning the full range of professor grades in the USA. Associate Professors are appointed jointly by a University department/faculty and an Oxford college, and you will have a contract with both.

We are open to different areas of specialization within social demography, such as (but not limited to) family and fertility, gender, migration, life course, population health, race, ethnicity, and socio-demographic inequalities, and the relationship between population dynamics, the environment, and sustainable development. Methodologically, we expect the successful candidate to use quantitative methods broadly defined in their research and be able to teach techniques of quantitative demography, including both macro- and micro-approaches. We welcome candidates with interests in different regions of the world, including those working on countries of the Global South.

The post holder is expected to undertake teaching responsibilities linked to demography, quantitative methods and life course research within the BA Human Sciences, and the MSc in Sociology and MPhil Sociology and Demography. The candidate will also be able to develop option modules within the undergraduate and graduate programmes. As a Tutorial Fellow at St John's College, the appointee will organise and oversee Human Sciences and contribute to tutorial teaching. They will also play a role in the governance and administration of the College. A mentor will be appointed to advise the post-holder.

The successful candidate should have:

  • A doctorate, or equivalent, in Demography, Sociology or other relevant subject area;
  • A record of research achievement at an internationally excellent level in social demography, and topics at the intersection of sociology and demography, as evidenced by world-class publications and innovative empirical research projects; and a proven ability to contribute to the Department's research culture and output;
  • Excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching, including tutorial teaching, in the required areas, including: Demography, Quantitative Methods, Life Course Analysis, and other related areas
  • The ability to relate well and appropriately to high-achieving and challenging students in seminar and tutorial teaching, in undergraduate and graduate supervision and in pastoral situations;
  • The ability to supervise research students working in Demography, Life Course, Sociology and/or Quantitative Methods within the Sociology Department and undergraduate students in the Human Sciences;
  • A strong record of collaboration and team work.
  • An additional allowance, currently £3,155 per annum, would be payable if an individual met the criteria to be awarded the full Professor title.
