Are you passionate about historical approaches to art and writing about art history? Are you attracted to working for a leading London University with a unique mission for widening participation?

The School of Historical Studies at Birkbeck, University of London aims to recruit an Associate Lecturer to teach on our undergraduate History of Art course.

As Associate Lecturer you would teach the following undergraduate module:

• Debates in Art History • 15 hours • Teaching Thursdays, 6-9pm May 2025

You should have good knowledge of historiographical and theoretical debates in art history and have completed or be near completion of a PhD. Some experience teaching a diverse group of students at undergraduate level is also essential.

Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties as required.

Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate specialism, or be near completion
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate level
  • A good developing track record of research in the field
  • A good understanding of different teaching and learning methods, and experience in working with students from a range of backgrounds
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, as well as good administrative skills.

    Remuneration :

    Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier' at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

    Contract :

    Fixed term, 5 week contract May 2025. Teaching Thursday 6-9pm. Closing date: Sunday 16 February 2025. Interview date: Friday 7 March 2025.
