Position Details

Reporting to the Associate Director of Retail Services, the Assistant Retail Store Manager will provide customer service to faculty, staff, students, and community customers. The Assistant Retail Store Manager will also manage inventory at the Wesleyan RJ Julia Campus Store in conjunction with the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore. This position will act as the backup to the Associate Director of Retail Services in their absence.

Responsibilities include

  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge and expertise in all electronic products sold throughout the store.
  • Maintain the store in good standing with Apple Authorized Campus Store requirements such as signage, merchandising, pricing, website, in-store demo management and weekly Apple reporting.
  • Maintain store inventory, which includes restocking daily, entering items into inventory, creating purchase orders, and fulfilling receiving and invoicing with the RJ Julia Bookstore Bookkeeper.
  • Sell merchandise using the point-of-sale system.
  • Collaborate with the RJ Julia Bookstore to maintain stock levels, transferring merchandise to and from the bookstore to keep both stores evenly stocked.
  • Manage special orders for customers, which includes processing the order, and once received, contacting the customer for pick up.
  • Fulfill and process online web orders, which includes picking items, making substitution suggestions, and contacting customers when orders are ready for pick up or with issues.
  • Organize and keep track of back ordered products.
  • Train and manage student staff on point-of-sale, merchandising and customer services.
  • Provide student coverage as needed, especially when students are off campus (Summer, Winter and Drop/Add periods).
  • Provide consultative solutions for faculty, staff, students and community customers.
  • Regularly tour the sales floor, and assist customers, which may include demonstrating product features and identifying and recommending solutions. Answer the phone, store emails and respond to bookstore questions about technology.
  • Research market trends in technology to ensure competitiveness and provide recommendations for change in product, marketing strategies or general store look/layout.
  • Attend merchandising and retail webinars or in-person conferences to stay up to date on trends and ideas.
  • Create digital content when needed using Adobe and/or Canva.
  • Assist in event planning, advertising, and execution.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This is an on-campus position.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree and 3 years experience in a retail environment or related industry experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Prior experience working with technology, and using a point-of sales system to manage inventory and process sales transactions.
  • Prior experience managing and training staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning about technology and new products including research and product
  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Adobe, Canva and social media platforms.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Prior experience with higher-ed operations.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Prior technology retail experience.
  • Prior experience managing and training student staff.
