Assistant Professor: Engineering Science

Assistant Professor: Physics

Thomas More University, a Catholic diocesan University in suburban Cincinnati (Crestview Hills, KY) seeks a qualified candidates for two separate positions; an assistant professor of engineering science and an assistant professor of physics. Both appointee's responsibilities will involve undergraduate teaching, service to the university, and undergraduate focused research. The appointee for assistant professor in engineering science will lead an effort to develop a new engineering science program at the university. Both appointees must support and advance the University's Catholic mission and commitment to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition.

We invite applications from candidates who are doctorally qualified with degrees conferred no later than summer of 2023. For the assistant professor in engineering science, a doctoral degree in engineering or related disciplines is required. For the assistant professor in physics, a doctoral degree in physics or related disciplines is required. Candidates with an experimental background are preferred.

The appointment will begin in August of 2023. Applications received by December 16 th, 2022 will receive full consideration. Appointed faculty will be housed in the Department of Mathematics & Physics within the St. Elizabeth College of Natural & Health Sciences. The Department currently offers degrees in Mathematics and in Physics, including the option of a pre- engineering track.

The term appointment is renewable and ongoing and may be converted to a tenure-track position in the future based on successful demonstration of the following. Faculty are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, service to the university, and an on-going program of research and publications, presentations at conferences, and collaboration with students on projects. Faculty actively participate in student advising and mentoring, assist in building community partnerships, engage in program assessment, contribute to hiring their colleagues, lead accreditation processes, and create opportunities for student-faculty collaborative research and service opportunities. Faculty also work to recruit and retain their majors. For the assistant professor in engineering science, conversion to a tenure-track position is also based on successful development of an engineering science program.

Qualifications

The appointee for assistant professor in engineering science must have an interest in developing an undergraduate program in engineering science, should have the ability to lead the program once launched, and should be enthusiastic about teaching, involving students in research, and developing education programs that enable graduates to become successful professionals. The assistant professor of engineering science should be capable of effectively teaching introductory physics (calculus- or algebra-based), mid- and upper- level engineering courses (the engineering discipline will depend on the appointee's background), the associated labs, and a general education course that counts as a science credit. Candidates for the assistant professor of engineering science must hold a doctoral degree in an engineering field from a regionally accredited university. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctorate by summer 2023, is required.

The Assistant Professor of Physics should be capable of effectively teaching introductory physics (calculus- or algebra-based) lectures and laboratories, upper level physics lectures and laboratories, capstone seminars in physics, and general education science courses for non-majors. Candidates for the assistant professor of physics must hold a doctoral degree in physics or a related field from a regionally accredited university. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctorate by summer 2023, is required.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially with faculty colleagues are required.
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching foundational courses in physics, including relevant lab components
  • Demonstrated potential for conducting undergraduate level research and publishing scholarship
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues in related departments and with a diverse student population
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated potential or willingness to teach discipline-specific electives and experimental courses
  • Demonstrated potential or willingness to implement multiple teaching modalities (e.g., face-to-face, hybrid, online learning) and in varying modules (16-week, 8-week, and 4-week sessions)
  • Demonstrated potential or willingness to implement evidence-based teaching strategies that are effective for diverse learners
  • Demonstrated potential or willingness to apply for external funding for research activities
  • Experimental backgrounds preferred
  • Duties:

  • Provide high-quality instruction that supports diverse student success
  • Offer reasonable office hours for students
  • Collaborate with the others in the Department regarding course content, objectives, and assessments
  • Collaborate with other in the Department to maintain the equipment inventory
  • Develop a research agenda with high-quality outcomes leading to academic publications and discipline-specific conferences which may benefit diverse populations
  • Apply for external funding to support research agenda
  • Participate in the refinement of the curriculum
  • Share in program activities including student mentoring and advising, curriculum assessment, and student recruitment and retention
  • Work collaboratively with others in the department, college, and university
  • Engage in activities that support diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus, in local and global communities, and the profession
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, community, and profession
