About URI:

The University of Rhode Island enrolls approximately 17,000 students across its graduate and undergraduate programs and is the State’s flagship public research university, as well as the land grant and sea grant university, for the state of Rhode Island. The main campus is located in the historic village of Kingston, and the Bay Campus is located in Narragansett. Both campuses are near major beaches in a beautiful coastal community. URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City.

A Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, beginning in Fall 2027. We are particularly interested in candidates developing innovative technologies and computational approaches to understand, monitor, restore, or enhance human health and function. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation technologies, robotics, bioinstrumentation, biosensors, wearable technologies, neuroprosthetics and assistive technologies, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, AI-driven immersive technologies and biomedical big data.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI) became an independent department within the College of Engineering in the 2026 academic year, following a long history as a program within the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering. As part of this transition, the undergraduate curriculum was revised to establish three primary tracks: Bioinstrumentation and Neural Engineering, Biomechanics and Prosthetics, and Biomedical AI. Biomedical Engineering currently offers a B.S. degree and partners with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The Department is currently developing independent M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

Our BME faculty conduct research in neural signal processing, neuro-instrumentation, neuro-robotics, neuromodulation, wearable health systems, digital health, medical imaging and signal processing, physiological modeling, biomedical AI and machine learning, and assistive and rehabilitation technologies. The interdisciplinary nature of the Department provides faculty with opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across the University. A recently inaugurated 195,000-square-foot engineering building provides an excellent environment for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
