About the role

Applications are invited for an Assistant Curator/Assistant Lecturer in Classical Archaeology. Reporting directly to the Keeper of the Department of Antiquities in the Ashmolean Museum, the post-holder will divide his/her time equally between the Department of Antiquities and St John's College and will collaborate with other Ashmolean, GLAM and College staff as appropriate.

This is a fixed-term career development opportunity for an individual seeking a career in curatorship and/or university teaching. You will develop the key skills of modern curatorship – including working on permanent displays, temporary exhibitions, and responding to public enquiries – and you will deliver undergraduate teaching in Classical Archaeology. You will be supervised and mentored by staff of the Ashmolean and St John's College, and you will be expected to develop and maintain your own learning objectives throughout the appointment.

This is a full-time, fixed-term post for 21 months, working 37.5 hours per week.

About You

You will have a postgraduate degree in Classical Archaeology or a related field.

You will be able to deliver tutorial teaching to undergraduates in Greek and Roman Archaeology options on the Oxford syllabus (preference will be given to those able to teach Greek Art and Archaeology ca. 500-300 BC and/or Art in the Roman Empire Finals options).

You will have experience of work (including volunteering) in a museum or similar environment and/or experience of archaeological fieldwork, as well as a sound understanding of issues surrounding collections care, conservation and security.

Experience of university or museum outreach/public engagement is desirbale.
