Assistant Conservator (at the rank of Executive Officer) in the University Libraries (Ref: 531084)
The University of Hong Kong Libraries collections include Western rare books (16th–19th c.); Chinese rare books, manuscripts, rubbings and artwork on paper (12th–20th c.); historical photographic collections; architectural drawings/reprographics; University Archives Collections; Hong Kong-related publications, and other archival collections and materials. The appointee will join the team of Book and Paper Conservators, Assistant Conservators, Conservation Technicians, and work collaboratively with other library divisions, university departments and local GLAM organizations. He/She will work in the Libraries' Preservation Centre located offsite in Aberdeen and may be required to work in the Main Library on the University campus.
The Role
Reporting to the Head of Preservation and Conservation, the appointee will share responsibilities for various collection care activities. Principle responsibilities include:
Contribution to the planning and preparation of preservation and conservation outreach activities is also expected. Depending on the appointees' qualifications and aptitude, the appointee will have the opportunity to be assigned a variety of tasks. The shortlisted candidates will need to present a portfolio of completed treatment work or conservation projects during the interview.
Qualifications and Qualities
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree or above in preservation and conservation- related fields (or an equivalent combination of apprenticeship, advanced courses, internships and work experience); a good understanding of paper or book conservation basics; knowledge of current conservation practices and ethical standards; and awareness of cutting-edge technical developments in the profession.

The appointment will be made on a fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, In addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of basic salary.
