Assistant/associate Professorships in Algorithms

The Computer Science Department at IT University of Copenhagen invites applications for several faculty positions in Algorithms at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor. The proposed starting date is September 2024 or soon thereafter.

The Candidate

We look to hire candidates holding a PhD in computer science, especially in algorithms, mathematics, or other fields related to the theory of computation.

The candidate is expected to contribute to ITU's existing Algorithms Research group and to conduct research and research-based teaching in core algorithmic areas such as Parameterized Complexity, Graph Algorithms, Randomized Algorithms, and Data Structures. Highly qualified candidates in all subfields of algorithms and computational complexity are encouraged to apply. We expect a record of peer-reviewed publications in areas covered by conferences and journals such as FOCS, STOC, SODA, ICALP, ESA, IPEC, JCSS, Discrete Math, SIAM J Comp.

Candidates are encouraged to document relevant expertise such as:

Competences in developing and conducting teaching at all educational levels that is both effective and well received by students, including teaching and development of large undergraduate courses.

Experience in designing and implementing algorithms for industrial applications.

A record of contributing to the goals of the institutions in which they have worked as well as contributing to the research community, for example participation in committees, etc.

Extracurricular outreach activities

In addition, candidates for a position as associate professorship should be able to:

Attract external research funding

Supervise PhD students

Be willing to learn Danish (for applicants who cannot speak a Scandinavian language)

It is understood that even highly qualified applicants will satisfy these requirements to varying degrees, for example because of differences in countries and research fields.

Job description

The candidate is expected to perform research activities in collaboration with fellow faculty members in the Computer Science Department, especially the Algorithms research group, and to develop interdisciplinary collaborations when relevant.

The candidate is expected to contribute to the IT University's education programs, both by giving courses and by supervising BSc and MSc theses. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to engage with society through external collaboration, to participate in securing external funding, and to contribute to the IT University's strategic goals.

Note that the assistant professorship is a temporary position for up to 3 years with the possibility of extension.

General information

The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.

About the Computer Science Department

The ITU Computer Science Department conducts research in all aspects of computer science and data science, including algorithms, databases, government IT, machine learning, natural language processing, network science, optimization, programming languages, quantum computing, robotics, security, semantics, software engineering, software verification, type theory, and more, as well as a range of applications. The department has 55 permanent faculty, 65 PhDs and postdocs, as well as other staff. It is responsible for the IT University's most technical education programs BSc Software Development, BSc Data Science, MSc Computer Science, MSc Data Science, and MSc Software Design.

Salary and terms of employment

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Taxation's agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and job structure for academic staff at universities.

For candidates applying for the Assistant professor position: documentation of pedagogical experience and teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position

For candidates applying for the Associate professor position: documentation of a) received observation and feedback on teaching, b) pedagogical experience and training courses as a teacher, c) a formal written assessment of teaching competence and d) a teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position

For candidates applying for the Associate professor position: a record of contributing to the goals of the institutions in which the candidate has worked, for example participation in committees, etc.

The applicant will be accessed according to the Appointment Order from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of 13 March 2012.

The IT University may use shortlisting in connection to the recruitment process. In case of shortlisting, the Chair of the hiring committee selects applicants for assessment in consultation with the hiring committee after the application deadline. All applicants are notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The shortlisting of candidates for assessment is based on the criteria in the job posting.
