ARC Development Manager

Job Purpose

The ARC Development Manager is a key leadership role within our £116M flagship research building, the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre, and is responsible for overseeing and managing the strategic development activities of the ARC. This role plays a crucial part in driving the growth and success of the ARC by fostering collaboration, identifying opportunities, and managing resources effectively. The ARC Development Manager will work closely with researchers and professional services to support their activities and facilitate multi-disciplinary initiatives across the building.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Planning:

1. Collaborate with the ARC leadership team to develop and implement strategic plans that align with the ARC's goals and objectives.

2. Identify and evaluate opportunities for growth, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and innovation within the ARC.

3. Play a key role in developing investment/business cases that will realise the ARC's objectives by analysing current occupancy/usage data in combination with horizon scanning activities.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration:

4. Facilitate collaboration among researchers and professional services staff across multiple disciplines to foster a culture of innovation and knowledge exchange.

5. Identify opportunities for cross-disciplinary projects, partnerships, and initiatives that align with the ARC's strategic objectives.

6. Support the ARC leadership team with interdisciplinary events, workshops, and forums to encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas.

Resource Management:

7. Work closely with researchers and professional services staff to understand their resource needs and support their development efforts.

8. Assist in identifying and securing resources, including equipment, funding, and staffing, to enable research projects and initiatives.

9. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to optimize the allocation of resources and ensure their efficient use.

Stakeholder Engagement:

10. Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including researchers, professional services staff, industry partners, funding agencies, UK and Scottish Government officials, major donors and other key influencers.

11. Serve as a liaison for the ARC, promoting effective communication, and fostering collaboration.

12. Represent the ARC at conferences, meetings, and networking events to enhance its visibility and reputation.

Project Management:

13. Providing leadership to strategic projects within the ARC, ensuring their successful execution and timely completion. Projects include:

- space reconfiguration projects

- change management projects

- strategic initiatives

- high profile events/visits/engagement activities

- environmental enrichment projects

14. Develop project plans, set objectives, allocate resources, and monitor progress to achieve desired outcomes.

15. Coordinate with project teams, stakeholders, and external partners to ensure effective collaboration and project success.

Other:

16. Deputise for the Head of Operations in meetings.

17. Undertake any other appropriate duties as directed by the Head of Operations and the ARC Director.

18. Represent Research Services at meetings, external groups, conferences, and seminars to keep up to date with developments and gain and share across the team information/knowledge of working practices in the higher education context.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Relevant degree/postgraduate qualification, or the ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar related role(s).

A2 Detailed and authoritative knowledge of the roles and interplay of the various stakeholders and service providers in a complex research environment.

A3 A deep understanding of the higher education and research sector, including its challenges, trends, and regulatory environment.

Desirable:

B1 Postgraduate qualification in project management, business administration or a STEM subject.

B2 Detailed and authoritative knowledge of laboratory logistics/operations and infrastructure.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Excellent planning, organisation, time and workload management skills with proven ability to prioritise demands and meet deadlines.

C2 Ability to work proactively and flexibly, adapting to changing priorities or requirements.

CX Excellent project management skills.

C3 Ability to lead change management projects within a complex, multi-user work environment.

C4 Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to liaise and communicate at all levels across the organisation and deal with issues using tact, diplomacy and discretion.

C5 Self-motivation and proven ability to work autonomously.

C6 Excellent ability to negotiate with colleagues at all levels.

C7 Proven ability to manage the performance of direct line staff.

C8 Effective numeracy skills and the ability to interrogate financial information.

C9 Excellent IT skills including Excel, Outlook, Word and networked systems.

C10 Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with absolute discretion.

Desirable:

D1 Ability to work flexibly during periods of increased activity.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Proven and significant experience of operational management within a busy multi-functional research environment.

E2 Experience of matrix management and cross functional and organisational working

E3 Experience of strategic planning, organising and setting priorities, applying initiative and independent judgement to achieve objectives.

E4 Experience of communicating effectively with colleagues at all levels and across organisational boundaries.

E5 Experience of strategically influencing colleagues at senior level.

E6 Experience of managing conflicting interests.

E7 Experience of programme or project management.

Desirable:

F1 Experience of working in a STEM research environment.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8, £48,350 - £56,021 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and open ended. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.
