  • About This Opportunity

    Join our team as a Technical Officer (Research) to support and supervise research projects at our QASP facility and remote sites. You'll work under the guidance of Assistant Managers to ensure compliance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across a diverse range of research activities involving animal handling.

    You'll be responsible for facilitating research activities spanning from smaller livestock in controlled housing conditions to large animals in outdoor pens, feedlots, bio-containment facilities, and pelletising research diets in our R&D Feed mill. Your duties will encompass the safe and effective use of equipment, machinery, chemicals, and other materials in line with Queensland Health and Safety legislation, as well as University of Queensland, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) guidelines.

    This position is based at our UQ Gatton Campus but may require occasional travel, including to rural and regional areas. Willingness to travel, including nights away from home, could be required as part of this position.

    Key responsibilities will include:

    Research Activities

  • Provide technical support in livestock research, operating in both intensive and extensive settings while adhering to SOPs.

  • Participate in planning, organizing, and conducting experimental research projects across various animal species, under the guidance of Assistant Managers Research and Operational.

  • Assemble research equipment and set up facilities, including training staff, and ensure the care and maintenance of equipment and experiments.

  • Maintain accurate records of activities, results, and outcomes, while assisting with research projects as directed.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, collaborators, university staff, and students to achieve project outcomes.

  • Oversee project activities to ensure proper use of facilities and equipment, adhering to safety guidelines, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.

  • Finance and Administration

  • Assist in formulating Service Level Agreements (SLA) and ensure accurate data recording and reporting in compliance with WHS, OGTR, DAFF, and ISO9001 guidelines.

  • Provide advice on optimal resource utilization and practical aspects of facility management, under the direction of Assistant Managers Research and Operational.

  • Follow protocols for the QASP Sustainability Program to ensure the welfare of staff, students, research animals, and the environment.

  • This is a full time, three year appointment at HEW Level 5. This role is based at our Gatton campus but will require some travel.

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $77,396 - $86,029 plus super 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $90,553 - $100,654 per annum.

    About You
  • Completion of a relevant degree and at least 2 years subsequent relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Possess technical knowledge and skills to support livestock animal research projects within an intensive and extensive animal research facility.

  • Possess basic mechanical and workshop skills and practical knowledge and competencies in the use of hand tools, plant and machinery and where necessary the possession or capability to possess the required permits for the use of tractors, forklifts and other heavy machinery.

  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of animal husbandry practices, animal welfare, management, biosafety and biosecurity systems in intensive and extensive animal environment.

  • Possess an understanding of the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and adherence to animal ethics guidelines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of use of animal sampling equipment, animal handling methods and acquiring preparing and presenting biological material and also decontamination and sterilizing processes.

  • Competence in data recording and the use of computer hardware and a range of software including the use of the Microsoft Office suite.

  • Experience in the application of health and safety practices in an animal research environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with work colleagues, researchers and post graduate students.

  • Strong ability to independently problem-solve, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines, with demonstrated experience in resolving technical issues.

  • Ability to drive (Queensland C Class Licence) and possess plant operation certification.

    Medical Clearance: It is a condition of employment for this role you complete a satisfactory medical clearance(s), including disclosure of relevant medical history, to undertake such work without unreasonable risk to your health and safety. Additionally, you are required to fully comply with necessary ongoing health monitoring procedures and control measures.
