Active Travel Study Manager

Job Purpose

The successful candidate will take responsibility for running studies to encourage use of active travel (e.g. cycling). Tasks will include study set- up, recruitment of study participants, supporting implementation of the solutions and collection of participant data. They will liaise with key internal, external and community partners. The successful candidate will ensure the studies are efficiently run and key deliverables are met on time.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Take a lead role in the direction of all aspects of the studies and be accountable for the study and study management activities.

2. Oversee overall operations related to the study including study set-up, recruitment of study participants, implementation of the solutions and data collection.

3. Review and revise the project strategy protocol, standard operating procedures and other study related documents.

4. Monitor the progress of research activities, develop and maintain accurate records and prepare periodic reports, as required.

5. Establish and maintain effective channels of communication with the research team and internal and external partners, advising on progress and potential areas of risk to the project.

6. Manage the study milestones and deliverables and other relevant outputs.

7. Use initiative and judgement to identify and resolve any issues effectively and efficiently.

8. Manage the project budget, monitor project expenditures and ensure financial procedures are adhered to.

9. Maintain complex and/or high-volume databases of participant data.

10. Use specialist knowledge to contribute to the writing up of reports/publications arising from work on the project.

11. Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College/Institute/School and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research aims and support the broader strategic aims of the University.

12. Contribute to the outreach and recruitment activities of the University/College/School/Institute.

13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/PIs.

14. To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.




A1. Degree or equivalent (in active/sustainable travel, physical activity, health, or related discipline)

A2. Expert knowledge in intervention development and evaluation projects


B1. Higher degree in relevant discipline (e.g., Masters or Doctorate).



C1. Strong project/trial management capabilities.

C2. Strong qualitative/quantitative data collection skills

C3. Excellent communication skills both oral and written.

C4. Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills.

C5. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

C6. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

C7. Ability to organise and prioritise work and meet deadlines.

C8. Computer competency including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel.



E1. Proven experience in project management, particularly in the field of active travel/physical activity/health related intervention development and evaluation projects

E2. Proven experience in qualitative/quantitative data collection

E3. Significant experience in the field of active travel/physical activity/health related intervention development and evaluation projects

E4. Relevant managerial experience in a similar or related role.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum pro rata.

This post is part time (28 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 27 months.
