Student Welfare and Support Services works collaboratively on student health and welfare issues with colleagues in colleges, academic and administrative departments, the Oxford University Student Union and key statutory services and other partners outside of the University.

Services include the Counselling Service, Disability Advisory Service, the Sexual Harassment and Violence Support Service, Peer Support Programme, and Mental Health Awareness Training , all aimed at supporting the well-being of our students so they can flourish academically.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Academic Skills Advisor (Assistive Technology) to join us on a fixed term basis until July 2026.

About the Role

The Academic Skills Advisor (Assistive Technology) will play a crucial role in supporting disabled students across a wide range of disabilities, with a particular emphasis on assisting blind and partially sighted students at the University of Oxford. This role ensures that students are not only informed about the available assistive technologies (AT) but also equipped to use them effectively to enhance their learning experience.

The role will also involve providing consultancy support to staff who work directly with disabled students, to facilitate the sharing of resources, information, and insights on assistive technology and to inform and develop wider digital accessibility and inclusive practices across the collegiate institution to support academic skills development.

The role would be ideally suited to an experienced assistive technology specialist who has good project management skills, an understanding of the demands of a higher education learning environment and who is passionate about providing a positive experience for disabled students.

You must be comfortable working independently to develop and deliver projects, managing a significant and varied workload with competing demands, as well as working collaboratively with colleagues within the Disability Advisory Service, Centre for Teaching and Learning and other key stakeholder within the wider collegiate university (colleges and departments, IT Services, the Assistive Resources and Creation Unit (ARACU), Digital Education and Academic Skills teams).

About You

• You must have extensive experience of assessing and recommending assistive technology support for disabled individuals, in both one-to-one and group settings, in an education environment or similar service industry

• A demonstrable understanding of the demands of a university learning environment

• You must demonstrate a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of assistive technology options to support students with a range of disability impacts, including blind and partially sighted students, and including awareness of software limitations, possibilities and licensing considerations

• You must demonstrate experience of providing academic study skills support to students

• You must be able to work collaboratively with colleagues within the Disability Advisory Service, Centre for Teaching and Learning and other key stakeholder within the wider collegiate university

• You must be comfortable working independently to develop and deliver projects

• Be able to manage a significant and varied workload with competing demands
