Are you passionate about supporting academic success through innovative library services? Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Academic Services Librarian to join our new Academic Service team.

This role is responsible for developing and delivering innovative instructional programs and services, with a particular focus on supporting the Faculty of Business and Law. You will develop effective partnerships with the Faculties and Schools to ensure the Library meets the learning, teaching and research needs of its students and staff.

As an Academic Services Librarian, you will:

  • Act as the main channel of communication between the Library and the Faculty and Schools.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the teaching and research activities and, thus, the information and library needs.
  • Proactively liaise with teaching staff to ensure reading lists align with what the Library can provide.
  • Design and deliver engaging library inductions and information skills classes both face-to-face and online, ensuring they reflect pedagogical developments within the Faculties and Schools, and make use of new learning technologies and approaches.
  • Offer one-to-one support to students and staff and answer enquiries about resources, including advice on literature searching and systematic reviews.
  • Build relationships with professional support staff (e.g., academic skills and learning development staff), look for opportunities to work collaboratively and extend the range of support offered (e.g., digital literacy).
  • Proactively engage with postgraduate research students and research staff, promote awareness of Library resources and services in the support of research.
  • The ideal Academic Services Librarian will have:

  • Knowledge of a wide range of information resources or a willingness to acquire it.
  • Understanding of the research life cycle and Higher Education environment.
  • Ability to analyse data and provide effective research support.
  • Skills in designing and delivering digital and information literacy training.
  • Excellent IT skills, including MS Office and basic HTML.

    Salary and benefits

    £42,365 rising to £48,424 per annum which is Grade 7 of the College's London Pay Scale. The salary quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London.
