Academic Policy Manager (x2)

Job Purpose

To provide professional support for the modernisation, development and maintenance of University-wide academic policy covering the University's degree regulations and key aspects of the academic quality framework, together with academic support for students and casework for Academic Appeals, thus supporting the administration and management of the functional area of Academic Standards & Quality within the Academic Policy & Governance division of Academic Services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Directly support the Senior Academic Policy Manager to deliver a programme of on-going modernisation of the institutional degree regulation framework and suite of student support policies, including: extensive development work to support relevant workstreams of the University's Learning & Teaching Strategy; implementation and ongoing delivery of: amended regulations; policies and procedures; and communication of the changes across the University community.

2. Relying on detailed knowledge and understanding of academic regulations, support the management of the University's academic regulations and related policies and processes, leading on allocated areas of responsibility. Provision of sound and timely specialist guidance to the Clerk of Senate & Vice Principal and to a wide range of other colleagues, students and stakeholders, including the University's Validated Institutions.

3. Propose and support strategic and operational developments of the annual publication of the definitive statement of University Regulations and associated guidance to ensure optimal efficiency and accessibility as a source of regulatory information for the University community. Support the Senior Academic Policy Manager as a key contributor in the production of this annual online publication.

4. Lead on the development and operational management of assigned areas of activity within the Academic Standards & Quality team. Examples of the main areas of responsibility include Course & Programme Approval policy, systems and processes, Academic Standards Committee and Academic Regulations Sub- Committee, Case Conferences (assessment arrangements for disabled students), Equality Impact Assessments, and Court Resolutions.

5. Manage the business of committees and working groups engaged in the operation and development of policies and regulation within the functional area of Academic Standards & Quality, working closely with conveners and other stakeholders.

6. Manage casework for student Academic Appeals to Senate to ensure adherence to procedures. Briefing of Senate Assessors for Appeals and members of Senate Appeals Committees, and relevant colleagues on College level Academic Appeals to ensure effective operation of procedures and equitable treatment of students.

7. Contribute to the work and development of the Academic Standards & Quality functional area and wider Academic Services division. This may include such activity as support for quality enhancement and assurance procedures, e.g. Periodic Subject Review, and for the ceremonial calendar. Actively participate in team meetings and business and contribute to planning processes.

8. Undertake other duties as assigned by the Academic Policy & Governance management team.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary professional knowledge and management skills in a similar or a number of different specialist roles or Scottish Credit and Qualification framework level 9, 10 or 11 (ordinary/Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification), or equivalent.

A2 Detailed operational knowledge and understanding of academic regulations and policies at the University of Glasgow or in an equivalent higher education setting, or regulatory / policy development experience within a different sector, e.g. a legal environment or other private or public sector area.

A3 Knowledge of the organisation and administration of higher education in the UK including quality enhancement and quality assurance.

Desirable:

B1 Good knowledge of the structure and systems within the University of Glasgow.

B2 Knowledge of the University of Glasgow Learning & Teaching Strategy.

B3 Knowledge of the Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act and the Equality Act.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Ability to show initiative and work pro-actively and autonomously showing an appropriate level of responsibility.

C2 Good analytical skills and problem solving.

C3 Ability to interact successfully with all staff, including senior staff both internal and external to the University, and with students.

C4 High degree of IT literacy including familiarity with remote working technology.

C6 Highly effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to draft accurate, concise and comprehensive reports and communications, and articulate complex information in an accessible way and present to varied staff and student groups.

C7 Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines.

C9 Good interpersonal and negotiation skills.

C10 Ability to facilitate change effectively.

C11 Good numeracy.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Previous, direct experience of academic administration and knowledge of higher education or equivalent experience within a policy and / or regulatory environment.

E2 Experience of clerking meetings and drafting reports.

E3 Experience of managing complex processes.

Desirable:

F1 Experience of working with academic regulations e.g. codes of assessment, student codes for academic appeals.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.

These two posts are full time (35 hours p/w) and open ended. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.
