Position description

The Managing Director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Banatao Institute at UC Merced works under the general direction of the faculty director of CITRIS, leading the development and implementation of research-related activities, programmatic initiatives, fundraising and managing certain operational processes and programs in CITRIS and in cooperation with School of Engineering.

The Managing Director advances the strategic and operational objectives of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), a multi-campus research unit administered within the School of Engineering and in cooperation with the Office of Research and Economic Development. The CITRIS Managing Director resolves complex and competing demands of the program, not limited to strategic development of new programs and initiatives in advocating for advances in science and technology research at the UC Merced campus. The Managing Director handles critical and sensitive issues, information, and requests, and interaction with staff at the other CITRIS campuses (Berkeley, Davis, and Santa Cruz) and will be expected to participate in administrative, operational, and planning activities of the Center, and its initiatives, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Primary duties include administration of Center activities through A) Research Coordination; B) Communication, Education, and Outreach; C) Fundraising, Development, and Industry Relations; D) Operational Processes and Strategic Planning; and E) University and Campus Coordination.

A. Research Coordination

  • Design, develop, expand, implement, and improve CITRIS programs in consultation with Faculty Director;
  • Envision, develop, and execute funding proposals to support CITRIS research, education, and outreach activities in support of broader strategic direction for the organization;
  • Develop, convene and administer coordination of the Center's research agenda and reporting (including contracts and grants);
  • In cooperation with staff, assist CITRIS faculty in preparation of proposals and associated budgets;
  • Work with Office of Research and Economic Development and School of Engineering to align research efforts with programmatic priorities;
  • Perform research and writing related to CITRIS priorities.
  • B. Communication, Education, & Outreach

  • Organize workshops, lectures, symposia, and research exchanges focusing on CITRIS programs and initiatives;
  • Develop and coordinate CITRIS communications, not limited to digital media production (websites, social media, videography) and written reports (annual impact reports, reviews, and white papers);
  • Serve as a liaison with campus External Relations, news media, and general public, and guide the visibility of the center and publicize latest achievements;
  • Assist faculty with communication, education and outreach as it aligns with Center priorities;
  • Develop and promote CITRIS outreach and education via UC Merced Extension; build and help deliver course content to further CITRIS goals; develop and promote Executive Education in CITRIS priority areas;
  • Lead development and management of other education activities related to CITRIS initiatives, including international partnerships with public agencies, sister universities, governments, and allied foundations.
  • C. Fundraising, Development, and Industry Relations

  • Work with faculty to develop and submit grant proposals for CITRIS-related research as it aligns with CITRIS priorities;
  • In cooperation with the Faculty Director and campus staff, coordinate fundraising for CITRIS priorities;
  • Cultivate and maintain resilient relationships with potential donors and potential funding agencies to create short-term and long-term funding opportunities for CITRIS;
  • In cooperation with the faculty director and staff, review expenditures, payroll, accounts receivable, recharges and expenses on unit accounts;
  • Provide analyses and administration of budgetary, financial, accounting, and project reporting to meet the programmatic needs of CITRIS and Director.
  • D. Operational Processes and Strategic Planning

  • Develop short term and long-term operational plans;
  • In cooperation with Faculty Director, develop operational budgets;
  • Hire and supervise, as needed, additional administrative support personnel, such as CITRIS / Student Success Interns and student assistants;
  • Facilitate and oversee student assistants and interns as needed to fulfill Center mission and activities;
  • Assist CITRIS faculty in support of educational and research missions as aligned with CITRIS priorities;
  • Work with faculty advisory council to advance CITRIS mission;
  • Develop and maintain metrics of accomplishment as related to CITRIS activities.
  • E. University and Campus Coordination

  • Organize and attend meetings between Directors, faculty and stakeholders, advisory meetings and community events;
  • Collaborate on the development of long-term relationships with university partners as it aligns with CITRIS priorities;
  • Work with governmental agencies, non-profits, corporate partners and universities to build research capacity at UC Merced as it aligns with CITRIS priorities;
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with School of Engineering, Office of Research and Economic Development, External Relations, and other units to advance the campus mission;
  • Collaborate and coordinate with ORED and SOE to coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of CITRIS oriented activities, not limited to activities such as Research Week, Innovate to Grow, and Tech for Social Good programs;
  • Support the work of and provide liaison to additional campus centers, including Sierra Nevada Research Institute, Health Science Research Institute, and Blum Center, as well as broader UC centers and initiatives as they align with CITRIS priorities.

    Qualifications

    Basic qualifications

    Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D with an interest in emerging technological applications in the interest of society. A degree in engineering, science, health or sustainability is a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English is required.

    Additional qualifications

    The candidate should have demonstrable experience in at least two of the following areas: 1) diversity, equity, inclusion or belonging; 2) applications of science and technology for the benefit of society; 3) granting.

    Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of research and outreach, independently performs a full range of responsibilities, analyzes problems and issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

    Preferred qualifications

    Autonomy in decision-making preferred. Experience in dealing with research related administrative matters. Understanding of the higher education system. Proven team building skills, facilitation, and organizational and problem- solving skills preferred.

    Highly self-motivated individuals who have demonstrated the ability to design and execute and program and write effectively and professionally and to work well independently and collaboratively are desirable.
