Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences University of Copenhagen

The University seeks to appoint a professor to the Department of Immunology and Microbiology (ISIM) to commence as soon as possible.

Information on the department can be found at: https: // www. sund.ku.dk/.

Job description When considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of immunity to parasites with the main focus on species affecting humans and in particular P. falciparum. This would include investigations of immune evasion mechanisms employed by parasites and novel approaches to identify protective epitopes for vaccine design. Therefore, a deep knowledge and hands-on experience with a wide range of parasite, cellular, and immunological assays, as well as protein production, characterization and immunization strategies are expected.

Expertise on monoclonal antibody technologies would also be an advantage, since the Professor will be heading a facility for monoclonal antibody production and characterization intended for collaboration with other research groups at ISIM. Further, international, and national collaborations is key to all professor positions at ISIM.

The professor will teach parasitology, general immunology, and cancer immunology at the faculty, and will be the course leader for a master course in the immune defence and cancer. Further, the applicant should participate in running the graduate school of immunology and a PhD course in vaccinology.

The professor's responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • The Professor will be attached to Centre for Translational Medicine and Parasitology (https: // cmp.ku.dk), which is affiliated at the Department. Currently, the research groups at the Centre all work on malaria with an emphasis on Plasmodium falciparum infections. The work ranges from molecular studies on host-parasite interactions aiming at defining new vaccine targets to clinical studies optimising the use of anti-malaria drugs. The aim is to provide knowledge that can guide malaria vaccine development or improve the treatment of malaria.

Required qualifications Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding, and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university's external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer.
  • Provide research-based teaching
  • The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment The position is a permanent position.
