The brain is the most important organ in our bodies. It is the control center that regulates the actions and function of the whole body, it also keeps our hearts beating, and it allows us to move, feel, and think. These are some of the most compelling reasons to keep our brain health at the highest possible level, so we could delve into intense mental work such as doing research. Here are some of the most effective ways to keep an active brain while doing so.

Physical Activity

Physical activity will not impact your ability to keep active while doing research, however, it can improve both your long-term and short-term memory. This will, in turn, help you stay more focused when you need it the most like when you’re doing research. Many studies have shown that children and young adults who were asked to work out at least a few times a week showed tremendous improvements in their memory. Another great aspect of why physical activity should be performed on a regular basis is because it gives you more energy during the day and helps you sleep better at night.

Make Sure You Are Well-rested

One of the stepping stones towards keeping a very active brain during intensive research is to have it well-rested the night before. Good sleeping habits are the key to not only a better focus but to overall health. Studies suggest that sleep helps our learning and memory in two ways. Firstly, someone who’s been sleep deprived can’t have an optimal focus on what they are doing, and therefore can’t conduct research properly. Secondly sleep plays a big role in the consolidation of memory, which is crucial for learning new information. 

Good Diet

You must have heard the terms such as “superfoods” mentioned somewhere before. These foods can be very beneficial for the development and supply crucial nutrients to your brain, so it can be more active during extensive mental tasks. Some of the foods that boost your brain are, as it’s well-known, fatty fish. The reason why it’s on top of all the brain food lists is that our brains are made out of a lot of fat, and half of that fat is omega-3 fat which can be found in fatty fish. Other superfoods are blueberries, turmeric, broccoli, and pumpkin seeds.

The caffeine in coffee has many positive effects on the brain such as increased alertness, improved mood, and sharpened concentration. Caffeine keeps our brains awake by blocking a messenger chemical called adenosine, which makes us sleepy. It can also boost some of the “happy hormones” such as serotonin.


Many of these ways to keep an active brain need to be implemented in our daily lives as soon as possible so we would have better performance in doing research. The reason why is because doing research is one of the most important activities to improve our quality of life at the level of the whole world.
