What you'll receive

Three scholarships have become available through a joint endeavour between QUT Centre for Data Science and Hastings Deering to support data science research in an area of relevance to Hastings Deering.

This position will be based between Gardens Point campus and Hastings Deering Archerfield Office.

You'll receive a tax-exempt scholarship stipend at $28,854 (AUD) per annum for three years. This stipend will be paid fortnightly and indexed annually. This scholarship is for full-time study and can be used to support living costs.

A six-month extension to the scholarship is also possible, subject to approval.

A successful international student will be considered for a research degree tuition fee sponsorship, if successful in receiving the scholarship.

The opportunity to work with leading Data Scientists at QUT and Hastings Deering, including access to Hastings Deering data and expertise.

Eligibility

You must:

  • meet the QUT academic and English language entry requirements for QUT's Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • alternatively, be an exceptional Master of Philosophy (MPhil) candidate with the aptitude and willingness to articulate into a PhD program within 12 months
  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • have the ability to work effectively with both university and industry stakeholders.
  • The provision of a scholarship is conditional on successful application and admission to the Doctor of Philosophy course. Eligibility for admission to a research degree is determined by the Graduate Research Centre.

    We are aiming to fill these scholarships as soon as possible. It is expected that the students will be able to commence the scholarships and begin full- time study in 2022.

    To be considered for this scholarship you must be invited to apply for and be accepted into a PhD at QUT. The process is as follows:

  • Complete the application form (PDF file, 605.9 KB) for the Hastings Deering project and send it to Dr Char-lee McLennan (charlee.mclennan@qut.edu.au) who will match you with a project supervisor.
  • You will be invited to attend an online interview with the nominating supervisor and a Hastings Deering representative.
  • What happens next?
  • If successful in your application, you will be invited to submit an expression of interest (EOI) to study a PhD at QUT. See more information about this process here: How to apply for a research degree
  • If your EOI is successful, you will be invited to submit a full application including a research proposal to finalise your application.
  • Conditions

    The scholarship will be governed by QUTPRA rules (QUT Postgraduate Research Award (Domestic) or QUT Postgraduate Research Award (International) but will only include provisions for up to an additional 12 weeks of paid sick leave, paid maternity leave and paid extensions.

    There are additional milestones that will need to be achieved as a part of this scholarship that will be discussed with you at time of application.

    Hastings Deering is an unlisted public company registered in Australia, which carries on industry and commerce primarily in the field of the provision and supply of Caterpillar earthmoving equipment, however, it also provides solutions for mining and construction technology. Hastings Deering is embarking on a data maturity transformation and this joint research fellow appointment funded by Hastings Deering and QUT Centre for Data Science aims to scale their data science activities and accelerate their transformation.
