    REQUIREMENTS:

    Candidates will be evaluated in compliance with the requirements of the Statute of the University of Warsaw, the European Charter for Researchers.     Requirements:

  • Job title: assistant professor;
  • Group of employees: research and teaching;
  • Scientific field and discipline in which the candidate will mainly conduct research: social sciences, sociological sciences;
  • Research duties: conducting research, managing research projects, raising funds for research, publishing research results in the discipline of sociological sciences in journals and monographs, improving research skills;
  • Teaching duties: conducting classes in Polish and English, improving teaching skills, supervising MA and BA theses;
  • Organizational duties: organization of conferences, seminars, workshops, participation in the activities of selected research units (chairs and centers) existing at the Faculty, as well as in the proceedings of the decision-making bodies of the Faculty and the discipline of Sociological Sciences at the University of Warsaw and in their committees.
  • Expectations towards candidates:

    The candidates should hold at least a doctoral degree specializing in the digitization of society, the public sphere and the economy, with the ability to use advanced quantitative or qualitative sociological methods in their research practice. We expect the candidates to have a good knowledge of broadly understood issues of digitization and good methodological skills, as well as specific research interests focusing on selected areas of social life. We especially invite candidates conducting research on the spread of information technologies in various spheres of social life, on the progressive automation of decision-making processes (e.g. based on big data) and its social effects, including the impact of digitization on, for example, interpersonal relations, communication processes, the sphere of economy, politics, law and social control. We expect research experience documented by publications (experience in carrying out research using digital techniques will be an advantage), as well as readiness to teach related courses, in a workshop format, aimed at providing students with skills in the use of modern quantitative or qualitative methods for studying digitization processes.

    The expectations towards a research and teaching assistant professor include in particular: research and publishing activity, publishing articles in international scientific journals, obtaining external grants from domestic or foreign institutions, as well as active participation in the academic life of the Faculty of Sociology, including co-organizing and participating in seminars and other scientific events. Teaching duties will include conducting courses and supervising MA and BA theses at the Faculty of Sociology, in particular in Sociology and in Digital Sociology. Detailed topics and allocation of teaching duties will depend on the needs of the Faculty and the University of Warsaw. Employment as an assistant professor also entails the performance of organizational duties for the Faculty and the University.

    The competition is open to persons who meet the requirements set forth in the Act on Higher Education of July 20, 2018 (consolidated text: Journal of Laws 2020, item 85, as amended) and the Statute of the University of Warsaw.

    Candidates should demonstrate:

  • A PhD in social sciences (sociology, political science, economics, psychology, management science), science (mathematics, computer science) or related (e.g. Data Science) –– or documents to the effect that they will obtain a doctoral degree before September 30, 2021 (formal requirement);
  • Analytical skills: in-depth knowledge of the contemporary methodology of research on the processes of digitization of society, public sphere and economy; skills in quantitative or qualitative methods;
  • Ability to use software for data analysis (e.g., R, Stata, SPSS, Mplus, QDAS, Atlas.ti, MAXQDA), confirmed by the use of such software in previous research work; skills in the visualization of data and digital data acquisition (webscrapping / webcrawling, API) will be an advantage;
  • Research achievements documented by peer-reviewed scientific publications: articles in journals, books, chapters in peer-reviewed collective works which document the candidate's competences in the use of quantitative or qualitative methods to study digitization processes;
  • The evaluation of candidates will take into account their teaching experience (academic teaching, organizing trainings, workshops, etc.), especially teaching in the field of analysis of digitization phenomena, as well as in conducting training in quantitative or qualitative methods of data analysis;
  • In the assessment of candidates, organizational achievements will be taken into account (e.g.: co-organizing scientific conferences or conference sessions, institutional involvement; participation in activities for the benefit of non-academic communities, e.g., local government institutions, the third sector) and expert activity;
  • Very good active knowledge of Polish and English to a degree that enables writing scientific publications and conducting academic courses (a necessary condition).
  • The application should include:

  • Curriculum vitae (including a list of research projects containing information about the entities in which the projects were carried out, their PIs and the nature of the candidate's participation, a list of courses conducted by the candidate along with the level of study, field of study and number of hours, as well as information about the candidate's command of foreign languages, conducted training and workshops, expert opinions prepared by the candidate and his/her participation in expert teams, organizational experience at universities and beyond, especially in managerial positions, as well as other information confirming the candidate's fulfillment of the expectations specified in this announcement, including participation in conferences, scholarships and fellowships, research internships, membership in scientific organizations / societies, membership in editorial boards of scientific journals, participation in the organization of conferences, activities for the popularization of science, and other achievements);

  • List of publications (including copies of no more than five most important publications (for books, title page and table of contents);
  • A document (no more than three pages) containing a draft description of an original course (interactive classes: seminar or workshop, a total of 30 teaching hours) on the topic in which the candidate specializes, and which, in his/her opinion, would best allow his/her skills to be used in teaching in accordance with expectations described in this announcement. The project should contain (1) a general description of the activities, including the title, an outline of the course topic (one paragraph) and a plan of topics for each meeting, a list of a few examples of reading / materials / data sources / software, a description of the learning outcomes (especially the skills that the participants of the classes will have acquired), proposed teaching methods as well as the methods for engaging participants and assessing their knowledge; (2) a scenario of one selected course meeting. The project will be discussed during the interview.

    Information about the results of the selection procedure will be provided to the candidates by e-mail. The selection procedure is the first stage of the procedure set out in the University's Statute for the employment of an academic teacher. Its positive outcome is a prerequisite for further proceedings.

    The selection procedure will be carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the Selection Committee will perform an initial evaluation of the candidates based on the submitted documents.     Purpose and legal grounds of data processing
