Description

The Chair of Wastewater Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, Technische Universität Darmstadt, seeks candidates for the position of a

Researcher/PhD candidate – Advanced biological nitrogen removal

starting immediately for an initial appointment of 3 years.

At the Chair of Wastewater Engineering we are engaged in research and teaching on fundamental and practice-oriented issues of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. In particular, we focus on innovative biological processes such as biological nitrogen removal (nitritation, anammox). We investigate and develop new technologies such as biofilm and membrane processes. For the development and optimization of such new processes, we operate reactors on a laboratory and semi-industrial scale, and also transfer our experience to large-scale. Our group has a strong interdisciplinary character, especially with the interfaces to process engineering and environmental microbiology. The use of molecular biological methods is e.g. an important approach to better understand and optimize biological systems in wastewater treatment.

To strengthen our research in the field of advanced nitrogen removal (deammonification) we are looking for an environmental, civil, process or chemical engineer for a new international research project.

Your tasks:

  • Planning, construction and operation of lab-scale reactors for the investigation and optimization of deammonification processes for use in the main stream of municipal wastewater treatment plants
  • Project organization (preparation of project meetings and reports)
  • Collaboration in other research projects in the field of biological wastewater treatment
  • Participation in the preparation of research proposals
  • Supervision of student research projects
  • We offer:

  • Highly interesting and innovative research topics in the field of biological wastewater treatment and microbiology with plenty of scope for your own further development
  • Working in an interdisciplinary team of civil, environmental and process engineers, and biotechnologists and microbiologists
  • International research environment with the opportunity to gain international experience
  • Highly equipped laboratories with reactor setups, microelectrode measurement devices and molecular biological tools
  • We seek:

  • Successfully completed university degree (diploma, master) in the field of civil, environmental, chemical/process engineering, biotechnology or similar
  • Very good knowledge in (biological) wastewater treatment
  • Experience in the operation of laboratory reactors and (semi-)technical experimental plants
  • Very good organizational skills and ability to work independently
  • Willingness to travel abroad
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt). Part-time employment is generally possible.

Please send your complete application document in one pdf file by e-mail, quoting the identification number, to Prof. Dr. Susanne Lackner, Franziska- Braun-Str. 7, 64287 Darmstadt, e-mail: s.lackner@iwar.tu-darmstadt.de.
