Job Title Weekend Reference Assistant

Position Summary

Provide reference service for all Library patrons and online Reference. Assist patrons in the use of print and electronic resources. Provide support for Reference and Instruction Librarians. Assist with Circulation and Weekend duties as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Acts as the initial contact person for the Reference Department.
  • Monitor online reference questions.
  • Possess and maintain current knowledge of citation styles, information retrieval tools, library collections, and one-on-one teaching practices.
  • Provide organization and support for the Reference and Instruction Librarians.
  • Direct advanced or subject-specific reference questions to the appropriate subject librarian.
  • Promote the intellectual resources of the library's collection and staff.
  • Maintain the schedule of the Orientation and West Conference Rooms
  • Monitor and respond to noise levels appropriately.
  • Maintain a collegial decorum with the Wesleyan Community.
  • Monitor the Circulation Desk and assist as needed.
  • Education, Certifications and/or Licenses

    Bachelor's degree

    M.S. in Library Science degree desired

    Experience

  • Reference and instruction experience desired
  • Computer and Internet experience required
  • Familiarity with network technology and electronic resources
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Knowledge of library practices, procedures, and techniques.

    Knowledge of standard filing practices.

    Proficiency with an integrated administrative system and current software programs.

    Ability to follow University and library policies and procedures.

    Proficiency with an integrated administrative system and current software programs.

    Ability to learn a variety of procedures.

    Ability to file and use library equipment including the online catalog and automation system.

    Ability to understand the role and the purpose of the library.

    Ability to pay attention to accuracy even with many work interruptions.

    Ability to be a self-starter who is detail oriented.

    Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently.

    Ability to maintain confidentiality, while complying with FERPA regulations.

    Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with a diverse group of library users.

    Ability to maintain a neat & professional appearance and office atmosphere.
