We seek a programmer to help build and maintain Social Psychology Network (SPN), a suite of nonprofit websites focused on peace, social justice, psychology, and sustainable living. The Network has received over 380 million page views since its founding at Wesleyan in 1996, and is supported by over 1,500 members from more than 100 countries.

Some of SPN's features include:

  • A database of more than 20,000 searchable links
  • Over 2,000 profiles featuring social scientists from roughly 50 countries
  • Interactive maps displaying expert profiles and graduate programs
  • A Psychology News Center that distributes curated headlines to more than 600,000 users via Twitter, Facebook, SocialPsychology.org, and an RSS feed.
  • The SPN Web Developer will use contemporary coding practices, tools, libraries, and database management techniques to improve SPN's content management systems, search engines, and user interfaces.

    The Web Developer will report to SPN's Executive Director, with close oversight from the Network's Director of Technology, and will work with student interns during the development and testing phases of each project.

    Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the design, development, and coding of SPN websites
  • Help maintain, support, and update existing SPN websites
  • Modify SPN applications and interfaces to improve functionality
  • Create customized content management systems
  • Refactor and enhance SPN database search services
  • Organize and document the programing code
  • Other duties as assigned
  • This opening is a .85 FTE position that involves working approximately 1,658 hours per year (32 hours/week), with flexibility in choosing the weekly work schedule, including a mix of traditional and nontraditional hours.

    The position will be on-campus initially but has the potential of becoming remote or hybrid (on-campus and remote) in the future.

    Remote work will only be considered for residents of CT, MA, NY, RI, VT, or NH. Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify.

    The intention is for the position to be available for at least three years, however funding has only been secured for the first year. Continuation is contingent upon continued funding.

    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree and at least three years of experience in web development or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Experience while a student can be counted.

  • Experience with HTML5/CSS, Python, JavaScript, NodeJS, MySQL, PHP, and similar coding languages.

  • Experience with relational databases and/or the development of database- driven web sites and back-end data systems.

  • Experience in installing, modifying, updating, and administering open source CMS software.

  • Being a team player who is able to work independently, meet deadlines, and cares about peace and social justice issues.

  • Having a commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact positively with individuals of different backgrounds.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Linux and system administration, search engine optimization, and/or Photoshop.
