Position Title: Water Resources Laboratory Manager Position Type: Staff Location: Villanova, PA Recruitment Type: Internal/External Applicants Work Schedule: full-time/12-months Avg Hours Week Department: 960-Center for Resilient Water Systems Position Summary:

The Laboratory Manager manages the operations of the Water Resources Research Lab within the Center for Resilient Water Systems (VCRWS). The Lab Manager directly supervises undergraduate student workers as well as serves as a team lead for the graduate students who conduct stormwater sampling. Regularly and proactively trains students in lab tasks and safety procedures. Conducts all nutrient and metals analytical testing, works with PIs to conduct quality control on data, and maintains data records. Conducts maintenance and troubleshooting for analytical lab equipment and works with other technicians and service providers on a regular basis. Ensures that all data is collected with scientific integrity and meets the quality control guidance outlined in the Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Duties and Responsibilities:

Individual's duties and responsibilities include:

  • Supervision of stormwater sampling, laboratory testing, and lab equipment operation/maintenance
  • Perform as Lead Safety Officer for laboratory
  • Laboratory management in terms of purchasing, budgeting, and planning future purchases
  • Hiring and supervising the student workforce; supervising and training of graduate and undergraduate researchers for general testing, and coordination the schedules and delegating duties to the students
  • Editing and reviewing the QAPP, writing and editing SOPs, creating and maintaining organizational paperwork for samples and quality controls
  • Maintaining and improving Data Management and Storage
  • Analyzing data to check for accuracy and improve methods for better results
  • Assisting in advancing the mission of the VCRWS, including professional development for graduate students, establishing professional relationships with partners, leading tours of research facilities and field sites, and helping organize the bi-annual research symposium
  • Continuing education and technical training on lab equipment and best management practices
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology or Engineering required.

    Experience with environmental/chemistry laboratory operations and analytical equipment. required.

    2-3 years experience in an environmental/chemistry laboratory setting, including oversight of operations and analytical equipment required.

    Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and project management techniques/software, along with srong written and oral communication skills required.

    Preferred Qualifications: Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

    Tools, machinery and equipment to be used: Water Quality Laboratory Equipment, such as discrete colorimetric analyzers, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), autoclaves, digesters, balances, ovens, etc.

    Potential e nvironmental conditions: Outdoor field sites during rain events, and potential exposure to certain hazardous chemicals

    Physical requirements: Minor lifting, repetitive tasks such as pipetting, and standing for extended periods. Individual may need to work outside standard business hours as demands of the job dictate.
