Department: Utilities/BDP Reports to: Plant Chief Operator
Summary: Under close supervision, performs basic maintenance work in the
operation of a City Wastewater (WW) Reclamation Plant; learns to monitor,
inspect, maintain, and adjust equipment according to job specifications and
Utilities Department technical standards.
Essential Functions: Essential duties and responsibilities may include,
but are not limited to, the following:
Assists in the operation of water treatment and distribution facilities,
or wastewater collection and treatment facilities; duties will vary
according to job assignment and skill level.
Collects WW samples, and takes meter readings.
Observes and monitors manual and automatic equipment; learns the operation
of pumps, compressors, valves and other electrical and electronic
equipment to control and adjust WW flow and treatment processes; learns
Department operating and technical policies and procedures.
Observes and reports variations in operating conditions; records meter and
gauge readings; reports anomalies to supervisor.
Maintains plant work areas, tools and equipment in a safe and orderly
condition; performs minor preventive maintenance on WW equipment.
Performs maintenance activities within scope of authority, and in
accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies
supervisors of problems beyond the scope of authority.
Maintains facility work areas in a safe and orderly condition, assists
with cleaning and maintaining buildings, equipment, grounds, and property.
Utilizes property safety precautions and assures that safety rules and
regulations are followed; reports safety hazards, equipment problems,
security issues and emergency situations.
Must have and maintain a cell phone for City use to hold this position.
Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general
public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when
interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of
work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as
required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
High School Diploma or GED required.
1 year of maintenance experience.
Knowledge of:
Tools and equipment used in operation and maintenance of WW facilities.
Methods, practices and standards for compliance to WW regulations.
Principles and methods of maintenance of WW facilities.
OSHA safety rules and regulations, and safety standards in utility plant
environments.
Skill in:
Monitoring WW plant operations, and identifying maintenance and safety
issues.
Reading and interpreting gauges and recording devices.
Closely following verbal and written instructions, and operating safety
procedures.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-
workers.
Effective verbal and written communication.
License and certification requirements:
A Texas State Driver's License is required.
Class D Wastewater license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
(TCEQ) is required within the specified timeframe prescribed by the
department.
Physical demands and working environment : Work is performed in Wastewater
Reclamation Plant facility; required to perform moderate physical work; and
lift and carry up to 20 pounds. Physical dexterity is required to work in
confined spaces and use precision tools and equipment. Must be available to
work on rotating shifts and must be available for 24-hour call. Work overtime
is required. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
