Job Summary

This advertisement is for a Visiting Research Scientist position in the lab of Dr. Christian J. Peters, an assistant professor in the College of Medicine at University of Illinois at Chicago. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and multidisciplinary research team pursuing fundamental questions in neural and cancer biology. The University of Illinois at Chicago is an “R1”-level public institution hosting cutting edge resources and facilities for biomedical research. This individual will be involved investigation of a core research interest in the Peters lab: the relationship between neuron and circuit activity in the midbrain tegmentum and nicotine dependence behaviors in mouse.


Job Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct experiments using mouse as a model organism: perform stereotaxic surgeries, fiber photometry recordings, multiple behavior paradigms, brain necropsy, tissue cryosectioning and fluorescence imaging.
  • Oversee experimental design development and implementation, analysis and interpretation of data and information, and manuscript preparation in collaboration with senior research faculty and research staff.
  • Work with postdoctoral fellows, mentor doctoral and medical student trainees and undergraduate students; participate in the oversight of laboratory activities.
  • In collaboration with the PI, write grant applications for extramural funding; prepare and submit research reports describing findings.
  • Author publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations of papers to professional societies.
  • Qualifications:

    Job Knowledge & Skills, Education, Experience

    PhD or MD in Biomedical Science, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related degree/field required. Two+ years of experience in using mice as a research model organism are required, and proficiency in all techniques listed above is highly preferred. A minimum of three years' related research experience required.

    Working Conditions

    Typical biomedical lab setting. Ideal applicant will be familiar with the lab environment and its conditions: requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, manual dexterity and experience with routine laboratory techniques standard to biomedical experimentation, as well as with field standard methods of data presentation.
