Join the faculty of a vibrant, multidisciplinary academic Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health, Indianapolis Campus. The Department is currently recruiting a full- time (12-month) faculty member, to serve as a Visiting Lecturer. The primary responsibility for this position is teaching in the undergraduate BSPH Community Health program in courses such as Social and Behavioral Dimensions of Public Health, Careers in Public Health, Theories of Health Promotion, and Navigating the Maze to Healthy Living. In addition, the Visiting Lecturer will advise and mentor students in the department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The person in this position may represent the department and school on various school, campus, and external committees relevant to the BSPH program. Moreover, it is expected that the Visiting Lecturer will work closely with other departments in the school, including other lecturers and those responsible for student advising, recruitment, general marketing, and other student services. Other service activities may include recruitment activities such as high school visits and guest lectures to promote department and school programs.

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health (FSPH) is looking for scholars who share our vision for communities where opportunities for health and well-being are abundant, valued, and equitable. Our mission is to foster community health and wellbeing through transformational partnerships in community-engaged research, teaching, practice, and service. As a department we value high impact educational practices including service learning and community engaged activities that benefit both students and community.

A successful candidate will possess formal education (MPH or other relevant graduate degree) and be either CHES® or MCHES® or eligible for certification. Candidates should have academic teaching experience as well as experience in course development. Ideally the candidate will have practical experience applying CHES related responsibilities and competencies in real-world settings.

About the Department: We are a department dedicated to work that positively impacts the health and well-being of individuals, families and neighborhoods. Some examples of current faculty research areas include but are not limited to behavioral health, community engagement, health disparities, and social determinants. We currently focus on issues related to addictions and substance abuse, diabetes, maternal and child health, social determinants of health, and stress through our departmental research arm, the Center for Community Health Engagement and Equity Research (CHEER). For more information see our website – https: // fsph.iupui.edu/research-centers/research/social-behavioral- sciences.html.

The Department has extensive, well-established collaborations with schools and centers across our campus, as well as in the surrounding community. Especially strong research and educational collaborations are present with the schools of Art, Education, Liberal Arts, Medicine, Nursing, and Science.

About the Campus: Our institution is dedicated to diversity and is one of only 18 universities nationwide to be recognized as the recipient of the prestigious Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity (the nation's oldest diversity higher education publication) for six consecutive years. The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences is looking for scholars who will contribute to our commitment to prepare our graduates to enter and lead in a diverse and complex world.

Our School is located on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. IUPUI is a unique urban campus that is a merger of two high ranking universities, Indiana University and Purdue University. Other resources on the IUPUI campus contribute to our success in research including the IU Simon Cancer Center, the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (ICTSI), and Regenstrief Institute, Inc. The faculty and staff of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences have particularly strong ties to the campus-level infrastructure that supports community engagement, including the IUPUI Center for Service and Learning, IUPUI Office of Community Engagement and the ICTSI Community Health Partnership (CHeP) program.

We are located within walking distance to the State Capitol building. Known as the “Crossroads of America,” Indianapolis, the country's 15th largest city, is a thriving economic and cultural metropolis. It is large enough to play host to the Indianapolis 500 (the largest single-day sporting event in the world) and Super Bowl, but small enough to personify small-town charm. The city and surrounding areas offer an exceptionally high quality of life including access to museums, cultural districts, excellent dining, professional sporting events, and historic sites. Indianapolis offers A-rated schools in both its central urban areas (public and private), as well as in surrounding suburban neighborhoods. Several suburbs are regularly voted “best places to live in America” by various national news sources. Residents enjoy a relatively low cost of living, safe neighborhoods, easy commutes, access to the award-winning Indianapolis International Airport, and emerging eco-friendly options such as downtown bike shares and scooter rentals.
